Gonzaga head coach Mark Few, who has been suspended for three games following a DUI citation, pled guilty to misdemeanor driving under the influence in Idaho and must pay a fine of $1,000 in lieu of spending four days in jail, according to court documents. He must also perform 24 hours of community service and his driver’s license was suspended until Nov. 5, after which he will be required to use an ignition interlock device while on unsupervised probation for the next year. West Virginia head coach Bob Huggins told ESPN that major conferences should create their own college basketball postseason event and ditch the NCAA tournament. “They’re doing it in football,” Huggins told ESPN at Big 12 media day. “Why wouldn’t they do it? The presidents and athletic directors that have all the juice, why wouldn’t they do it? Makes no sense why they wouldn’t do it. I think it’s more ‘Why wouldn’t they?’ than ‘Why would they?’ And then, the other people, they can have their own tournament. He also said, “Those Cinderella schools are putting 200 people, at best, in their gym, we’re putting 14,000.” More from Huggins HERE.
High Point head coach Tubby Smith, who coached the University of Kentucky men’s basketball program to the 1998 national championship and several Southeastern Conference titles, will have a jersey retired in his honor at UK. The official ceremony will take place Dec. 31 during UK’s home game against Smith’s current squad. More HERE.
Long-time Ithaca men’s basketball head coach Jim Mullins, who retired back in 2020, has joined the Ithaca WBB team as a volunteer assistant. Mullins led IC for 23-seasons, where he put together a 353-264 (.572) mark. More on this move HERE.
UConn head coach Dan Hurley apologized for a snafu with one of the baskets at UConn’s First Night festivities. “I’m a part of that failure, obviously the basketball programs are a part of that failure that we weren’t able to get the basket up and deliver the evening that the students should have gotten, and I apologize and we should all apologize for that. It shouldn’t happen. It can’t happen.” According to the Hartford Courant, the men’s and women’s basketball teams were introduced followed by a long lull as workers struggled to get one of the basket stanchions anchored to the floor properly.
