Albany Basketball Staff Update

In the DAILY DIRT back on 3/18, I mentioned that Vermont assistant Hamlet Tibbs and Roman Catholic (Philly) head coach Matt Griffin were in the mix for spots on Dwayne Killings staff at Albany. Those two hirings have now been made official. The official release is below. *I’m still hearing that Stetson DBO Luis Guzman is in play here for a spot here.

New University at Albany men’s basketball head coach Dwayne Killings has announced the first two additions to his staff.  Joining Killings on the sidelines will be Hamlet Tibbs and Matthew Griffin.

Tibbs joins Killings’ staff after spending seven seasons at Vermont as an assistant coach.  During his tenure, the Catamounts had a 166-61 overall record and 92-18 record in the America East.  Vermont was a four-time America East Regular Season Champion and three-time America East Tournament Champion during his seven-year stint. In 2016-17, the Catamounts set a program and America East record with 29 wins and had a perfect 16-0 conference record.  Prior to Vermont, Tibbs coached five seasons at Albany Academy and was also part of the Albany City Rocks program.

Griffin arrives at UAlbany from Roman Catholic High School in Philadelphia, Pa., where he was the Director of Athletics and the head boys’ basketball coach.  Griffin joined Roman Catholic High School in 2016, taking over a basketball program that had won each of the last two Catholic League and PIAA Class AAAA titles.  Griffin played at St. Joseph’s Prep, graduating in 2007, before becoming a team captain at Boston University.

Killings will fill out his staff in the coming weeks.
