Artis named Director of Basketball Operations at Duquesne

Duquesne University head men’s basketball coach Dru Joyce III announced Monday that Darik Artis has joined the staff as director of basketball operations.

Artis joins the Dukes after spending the 2023-24 season as an assistant coach at Orangeville Prep Academy in Mono, Ontario. While with the Bears, Artis conducted practices and individual workouts, edited film and built scouting reports and assisted with recruiting, travel and academic support.

A 2019 graduate of The Ohio State University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in communication, Artis spent the 2022-23 season as an assistant coach at NCAA Division II Alderson Broaddus, a member of Mountain East Conference (MEC).

The stint with the Battlers came on the heels of a 2021-22 season in which Artis served as a graduate assistant with the men’s basketball program at Cleveland State University. The Vikings finished 20-11 (.645) that season, including 15-6 (.714) in the Horizon League, and advanced to the National Invitation Tournament (NIT) under head coach Dennis Gates.

Artis, a native of Columbus, Ohio, began his coaching career during the 2019-20 season as an assistant coach with Columbus Africentric Early College High School in Columbus, Ohio, spearheading individual workouts and player development, before taking a role as video coordinator and assistant director of basketball operations at UC Davis during the 2020-21 season.

While on the staff with the Aggies, Artis was in charge of video and film exchange while also planning, developing and implementing a video program for the men’s basketball staff. UC Davis finished with a record of 10-8 (.556) during the 2020-21 campaign, a season that was abbreviated due to the global pandemic, advancing to the semifinals of the 2021 Air Force Reserve Big West Championship.

Joyce III is in his first season as head coach of the Dukes in 2024-25. Duquesne returns two starters and nine letterwinners from a 2023-24 team that finished with an overall record of 25-12 (.676), earned its first Atlantic 10 Championship since 1977 as well as its first victory in the NCAA Championship since 1969.
