Loyola Marymount Head Coach Bill Bayno has taken an indefinite leave of absence. Coach Bayno has been diagnosed with an undisclosed illness that is most likely related to the stress of coaching. Assistant Coach Max Good has taken over on an interim basis. Good has taken over for Bayno before – in 2001, Bayno was released at UNLV and Good coached the final 22 games (13-9). Good spent the last 7 seasons as the Head Coach at DII Bryant University accumulating a 132-86 record (.606).
There is speculation that Coach Bayno’s past drinking problems may have played a role in this decision, but we’ll give him the benefit of the doubt. I hope that this is not the case.
I don’t know how long Coach Bayno will be out for, or if he’ll return, but we here at HoopDirt wish him our best. This is a good example of the fact that coaching is not as glamorous as it looks. There is so much pressure to win games, recruit, and deal with the alumni, that sometimes it can be overwhelming.
