Begly Returns to St. Lawrence as Assistant Coach

The St. Lawrence University men’s basketball team is pleased to announce the addition of Corey Begly, a 2012 St. Lawrence graduate, to its coaching staff. Begly will join the Saints as an assistant coach under the direction of head coach Chris Downs who enters his 21st season.

The Geneva, New York native was a four-year member of the men’s basketball team, including the 2008-09 team that advance to the “Sweet 16” in the NCAA Tournament.

Begly returns to St. Lawrence after serving varsity basketball coach at Hyde School in Bath, Maine for the past four years. He accumulated a 58-20 record during his four years at Hyde and transitioned the team from the smallest public school league in Maine to the NEPSAC (New England Preparatory School Athletic Council) Prep League. He earned 2016 NEPSAC Class C Co-Coach of the Year honors, after finishing the season 20-7 as the MAISAD league champions and advancing to the final four.

“We’re very fortunate to have Corey join our staff,” said Downs. “He was recently named Co-Coach of the Year in the NEPSAC, which is a strong prep school conference both athletically and academically. As a player he made a great impact on the team through leadership and his ability to understand what needed to be done. Corey also comes from a family of coaches, his father Glenn was a coach at both Skidmore and William Smith and I know he will continue to take on a leadership role, the same as he did as a student-athlete.”

Begly earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in history.
