St. Mary’s College of Maryland Assistant Athletic Director/Head Men’s Basketball Coach Chris Harney ’97 announced the addition of Walter Booth, Jr. to the men’s basketball coaching staff. Booth will be the program’s first-ever full-time assistant coach and will also serve as the Assistant Director of Game Operations.
Harney said, “We are excited to have Coach Walter Booth join the men’s basketball coaching staff. With his vast experience and knowledge, he will be a great asset to St. Mary’s College of Maryland and to the young men in our program. He has committed to join us in assisting our student-athletes to a promising future as college graduates.”
The Silver Spring, Maryland native developed his coaching style through various coaching stops at the high school, club, and collegiate level.
In his most recent position, Booth was the co-director and head coach of U17 team at The District Basketball Club where 10 prospects have landed at Division I schools during his two-year tenure. He was the varsity associate head boys’ basketball at both Bowie High School (2013-15) and Takoma Academy (2012-13).
Booth spent four seasons at his alma mater, North Carolina A&T State University, as an assistant coach for the men’s basketball program. He was responsible for scouting opponents, game-planning, and recruiting. Booth signed 12 players during his tenure, including the Class of 2010 being named the best recruiting class in the Mid-Eastern Atlantic Conference by ESPN.
Not only did he coach at North Carolina A&T but Booth also played four years for Jerry Eaves. He led the Aggies in assists as a junior and senior as Eaves often relied on him to tear apart defenses with his excellent court vision and savvy.
Booth scored in double figures 10 times in his career and led N.C. A&T in assists 17 times in 105 games played as an Aggie. He scored 413 points, dished out 155 assists, grabbed 282 rebounds and averaged 18.8 minutes during his career. Before the 2006-07 season, Booth was named an Aggies co-captain.
He was also an excellent student, making the MEAC Commissioner’s All-Academic Team as a junior and attendeing N.C. A&T on an academic scholarship.
Booth graduated from North Carolina A&T in 2007 with a B.S. in business management.
