BREAKING: Rex Walters Fired as Head Basketball Coach at San Francisco

University of San Francisco Director of Athletics Scott Sidwell announced today the dismissal of head men’s basketball coach Rex Walters following eight years as the Dons’ head coach.

“I’d like to thank Coach Walters for his eight years of service to the University of San Francisco and our men’s basketball program,” said Sidwell. “However, I felt a change in the leadership of the program was necessary at this time in order for us to progress towards our goal of winning a conference championship and competing in postseason play on a regular basis.”

In eight seasons as USF’s head coach, Walters compiled a 127-127 overall record, including a 63-65 mark in West Coast Conference games. His 10-year career record, which includes two seasons as the head coach at Florida Atlantic, stands at 158-160.

Under Walters’ guidance, USF had three winning seasons (19-15 in 2010-11; 20-14 in 2011-12; 21-12 in 2013-14) and made three postseason appearances (College Insider.com in 2010-11; College Basketball Invitational; 2011-12; National Invitation Tournament in 2013-14). USF finished third or higher in the WCC standings on two occasions (3rd in 2010-11; t-2 in 2013-14) and posted winning conference records two times in eight seasons (10-4 in 2010-11; 13-5 in 2013-14). This past season, USF finished 15-15 overall and fifth in the WCC with an 8-10 record and was eliminated in the quarterfinals of the WCC Basketball Championships. He was named the WCC’s Coach of the Year in 2013-14.
