Effective June 1, 2017 the Cal Lutheran men’s basketball program will have a new leader. As announced by the University today, Tim Fusina will take the reins of the Kingsmen for the 2017 season and beyond.
He is looking forward to working in a supportive environment at CLU and is excited to work with a basketball program that can compete at the top of Division III.
“When I stepped foot on Cal Lutheran’s campus, it was obvious that this is a special place with a lot of special people,” he shared, “The support everyone has shown me has been incredible and I look forward to leading a new era of Kingsmen basketball.”
He joins the CLU family after a four-year head coaching stay at Centenary University located in Hackettstown, New Jersey, which is a member of the Colonial States Athletic Conference. Fusina led his teams to the only two winning seasons in program history in 2014, 15 and the only three double-digit wins at the school after earning 12 in 2016-17. Fusina guided the Cyclones to a 48-58 record during his tenure at the helm and advanced to two ECAC Tournaments.
As a coach, Fusina recruited and coached the 2015 CSAC Rookie of the Year and has also had four players earn All-CSAC. He also saw one of his players become the all-time assists leader while scoring 1,000 points at CU. Additionally, a number of student-athletes have been honored with academic awards.
Prior to his head coaching experience, Fusina spent five years as an assistant coach at Washington & Jefferson College in Washington, Pa. where he was responsible for recruiting, scouting and film exchange, as the academic coordinator and summer camps director.
Fusina hopes to aide his players in achieving their goals on the basketball court and beyond while working with great coaches and programs.
“I expect to give the tools necessary for our student-athletes to be successful and make a positive impact on campus and in the community,” he continued, “And to assist in whatever way we can to help our student-athletes graduate and continue on to do their life’s work.”
Fusina takes over a program that went 20-7 in 2016-17 and placed second in the SCIAC with a 12-4 mark, advancing to the Postseason Tournament for the seventh time.
