Cal State San Bernardino hires Billups as Assistant Basketball Coach

Cal State San Bernardino head coach Chris Tifft has announced the addition of former Cal Poly Humboldt assistant Brandon Billups to the Coyote basketball coaching staff.

“We are excited to welcome Coach Billups to the Yotes men’s basketball program,” said head coach Chris Tifft. “Brandon played a key role in helping us have success on and off the court at Cal Poly Humboldt. His experience, knowledge and work ethic will be a tremendous asset to our program. He has worked alongside some of the most successful coaches in college basketball, and we are fortunate to welcome him to San Bernardino.”

Billups arrives after two successful years at Cal Poly Humboldt, where he helped the Lumberjacks secure their most successful season in a decade. During the 2024-25 campaign, Cal Poly Humboldt won 18 games, culminating in a 12-win improvement over the previous season. The program qualified for the postseason for just the third time in 10 years, and advanced to the CCAA Conference semifinals for the first time since 2016. Billups also played a key role in recruiting Cal Poly Humboldt’s five all-conference selections, helping the Lumberjacks rank in the top 5 of the CCAA in multiple offensive and defensive categories.

“I would like to thank Coach Tifft and Shareef Amer for the opportunity to join the Cal State San Bernardino men’s basketball program,” said Billups. “It’s an honor to be part of a team that is consistently recognized as one of the top programs not only on the West Coast but across the entire nation. I am excited to help continue that success and work towards winning championships.”

Prior to his stint in northern California, Billups spent two seasons at Cal State Northridge, where he served as the Director of Operations and Interim Assistant Coach for the men’s basketball team alongside Tifft for two seasons.

Prior to CSUN, Billups spent one season as an assistant coach at Concordia University Irvine in 2020-21. With the Eagles, Billups assisted with the execution of game plans and practices along with the creation of scouting reports. He also aided with recruiting efforts and played a key role in all video operations within the program.

Before getting the assistant coaching job at CUI, Billups was also on the CSUN men’s basketball staff from 2018-20 as a graduate manager and video coordinator. He helped facilitate game preparation and scouting reports while managing all video components and assisting with travel operations. In 2019-20, the Matadors finished second in the Big West, the program’s highest conference finish in 11 seasons.

Billups began his collegiate career at Texas Christian University where he first served as a student manager for four seasons under both head coach Trent Johnson and Jamie Dixon. His final season saw the Horned Frogs win the 2017 National Invitation Tournament Championship.

Originally from Irvine, Calif., Billups graduated from TCU with a Bachelor of Science in Communication Studies and a minor in General Business Administration in 2017.
