Carruthers Added to Howard Payne University Staff

Howard Payne University athletics tabs UT Dallas assistant Travis Carruthers as the Yellow Jackets’ new associate head men’s basketball coach.

Travis Carruthers comes to Howard Payne from the University of Texas at Dallas where he has served as an assistant men’s basketball coach for the past eight seasons. There Travis was involved with all aspects of administration and coaching.

“I am very happy to have Travis joining the coaching staff,” said head coach Troy Drummond. “He brings a great amount of experience from UTD and he will be a great benefit to the program.”

Travis began working as an assistant at UT Dallas in the 2007-08 season. During his time as a UTD assistant coach, the Comets won two American Southwest Conference regular season championships. Of the eight teams he coached four made NCAA III national tournament appearances, three NCAA Sweet 16 appearances and one had an Elite Eight finish.

“I look forward to the opportunities at Howard Payne and working alongside Coach Drummond and the rest of the athletic and administrative staff,” said Travis Carruthers. “I can’t wait to be in Brownwood and help the men’s basketball program compete for an ASC title.”

Travis helped coach at UTD four All-Americans, four ASC Players of the Year, two ASC Freshman of the Year and 15 total All-Conference players in his time as UTD assistant.

In his four-year playing career at UT Dallas, Carruthers left a mark on the Comets men’s basketball program by becoming the all-time leader in assists (411) — and, in fact, was one of the nation’s leaders in assists during the 2005-06 season. He also holds UTD career records in free throw percentage (.878) and 3-point percentage (.385). Carruthers earned the starting point guard gig for Butterfield’s 2004-05 team, and capped his career three seasons later by receiving the UTD Male Student-Athlete of the Year award.

A native of Georgetown, Texas, he earned his Interdisciplinary Studies degree from UTD in 2007 and is in the process of completing a master degree as well.
