Casey named Head Men’s Basketball Coach at Manor College

Manor College Director of Athletics John Dempster has announced that Richard Casey has been named Men’s Basketball Head Coach.

Casey was also the Blue Jays Men’s Basketball Head Coach from 1994-1997 and 2009-2010.  In his first season (10-11 overall, 8-8 EPCC), he coached Blue Jays to Quarterfinal Postseason Tournament Appearance. Casey won first collegiate game, 78-77, at Philadelphia Bible College on November 14, 1994. After starting the season 1-7 and 0-5 in the EPCC, Manor finished regular season, winning nine of 13, including eight of 11 in the EPCC.  Freshman Mark Cunningham was voted Sam Cozen Junior College Player of The Year and second team All-EPCC.  In his second season (14-6, 11-5), he led the Blue Jays to Semifinal Postseason Tournament Appearance.  Casey won his first career postseason game on February 21, 1996 versus Thaddeus Stevens (104-67).  In his third season, Manor (22-4, 15-1) were the Regular Season Champions and Postseason Tournament Runners-Up.  The Blue Jays won the first 13 games of the season.  The 22 regular season wins are the second-most in school history since the 1994-1995 season.  The Blue Jays won 10 straight road games to start the season (November 13, 1996-January 11, 1997.  Manor also won 13 straight home games between February 5, 1996 and February 11, 1997.

Dempster on Casey: “They say home is where the heart is, well, I wanted to bring Rich Casey back home because I know he will be the heart of the basketball program moving forward.  Casey’s coaching history started at Manor College by building the program and making it a winner.  Now, he’s back to finish what he started.” 

Casey was previously the Valley Forge Military Academy and College (Wayne, Pennsylvania) Director of Athletics from 2013 through 2020.  He oversaw eight varsity (Baseball, Basketball, Cross Country, Football, Lacrosse, Soccer, and Track and Field) and three club (Golf, Ice Hockey, and Tennis) Academy programs.  Casey also oversaw 11 (Baseball, Men’s and Women’s Basketball, Men’s and Women’s Cross Country, Men’s Lacrosse, Men’s Soccer, Softball, Men’s Outdoor Track and Field, Women’s Volleyball, and Wrestling) College programs.  Academically, a total of 89 student-college athletes were named to the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference (EPAC) Semester All-Academic Teams from Fall 2016 through Fall 2019.  Casey was also the Men’s Basketball Head Coach for three seasons (2013-2016).  His 2014-2015 squad was fourth in NJCAA Division II in overall field goal (52.0%) and three-point field goal (44.0%) percentages.  While under his guidance, the college basketball program was ranked 17th in the country during the 2014-2015 season with a 96% graduation rate for college athletes.  Carnell McGirt was voted to the NJCAA All-Region XIX Division II Second Team in 2014-2015 and First Team in 2015-2016.  Ramon Wright was voted to the Second Team in 2015-2016.

Before he was named Valley Forge Military Academy and College Director of Athletics, he spent six summers as the Philadelphia 76ers Summer and seasonal camps.  Casey was also the John W. Hallahan Catholic Girls’ High School (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) Athletics Director and Softball Coach.

Casey was the University of the Sciences (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) Assistant Director of Athletics, NCAA Compliance Officer, and Men’s Basketball Assistant Head Coach.  He was also the Softball Head Coach (2006-2007).  Megan Trimble was voted Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CCAC) First Team outfielder in 2007.  Sarina Lavooy was voted CCAC Second Team Outfielder in 2006 and First Team At-Large Outfielder in 2007.

He was the Goldey-Beacom College (Wilmington, Delaware) Men’s Basketball Head Coach (2002-2003).  Casey was also the Neumann College (Aston, Pennsylvania) Men’s Basketball Head Coach for two seasons (1997-1999).  He guided the Knights to the eighth-best improvement (by wins) in all NCAA Division levels and its first NCAA Division III Postseason Conference Tournament appearance in his first season.  Al Cloud was voted to the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference Second Team and Jamal Green and Curtis Hightower were voted Honorable Mention.  Casey guided Neumann to another Postseason Conference Tournament in his second season.  Nate Williams was voted PAC First Team and Green was voted Honorable Mention.

Altogether, Casey has ten years of NCAA and NJCAA head coaching experience.

His first coaching jobs were for the Friends Select Middle School (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) Girls Basketball and Cathy Rush’s Future Stars Basketball Camps. He then was an assistant for the Archbishop Ryan High School (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) Boys Basketball team. 

Casey is a 1988 Temple University (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) graduate with a Bachelor’s of Arts degree in Marketing Management.  He attended Florida Institute of Technology (Melbourne, Florida) and played Baseball and Men’s Basketball.  Casey graduated from Northeast Catholic High School (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) and also played Baseball and Men’s Basketball.

He currently resides in Philadelphia with his wife, Caroline, and two daughters, Gwenyth and Darby.
