A familiar face is set to return to the sidelines in Tucker Coliseum as former Wonder Boys basketball player Greg Chenault will join the staff as an assistant coach.
“Greg is home run hire not only this program but for me as well,” said head coach Mark Downey. “I have watched Greg coach the Russellville High School team, including my son Bryce, for the last few years. His passion, knowledge, attention to detail and discipline with his teams has been impressive!”
“He takes pride in ATU, being an alum and a was a heck of a point guard for the green and gold. His experience will also be a huge asset in the state of Arkansas with recruiting ties to the AAU circuit and high school coaches.”
A 1994 graduate of Tech, Chenault returns to his alma mater after most recently spending time as the head boys’ basketball coach at Russellville High School. In his three years at Russellville, Chenault led the Cyclones to a program-record 24 wins in 2023-24 with consecutive state tournament appearances in 2023-24 & 2024-25.
“I’m really excited about returning to my alma mater where I was fortunate to win championships as a player and now have the opportunity to do so as a coach,” noted Chenault. “Arkansas Tech is a special place with special people and has a rich tradition in basketball. I want to help Coach (Mark) Downey and this program win games and develop student-athletes into successful young men.”
Prior to his time at Russellville, Chenault was the head girl’s coach at Bauxite High School for two seasons. In those two years, Chenault led the Lady Miners to a pair of 20-plus win seasons and consecutive state championship appearances.
In addition to his prep coaching experience, Chenault also has spent time in AAU/Club circuit with Off2U and Arkansas Wings as well as serving as a private skills instructor and shooting coach. On the AAU/Club circuit, Chenault helped lead a team to an AAU National Championship Runner-Up finish.
A four-year letterwinner at Tech, Chenault played in over 125 games in his career and ranks in the top-10 in program history in assists. Playing from 1990-94, Chenault helped lead the Wonder Boys to three-straight seasons with at least 20 wins and consecutive AIC Regular Season Championships in 1993 & 1994.
