Cherry named Assistant Basketball Coach at Lipscomb

Scott Cherry has been added as an assistant basketball coach at Lipscomb University.

Cherry joins the staff with decades of coaching experience, having most recently served as an assistant coach at Central Michigan University the last two seasons where he contributed to recruiting, game preparation and on-floor coaching.

In his first season with the Chippewas, he helped guide the team to its most Mid-American Conference league wins since the 2014-15 season and a fourth place finish after being predicted to finish 12th in the conference.

No stranger to the ASUN, Cherry made a stop at Jacksonville University prior to his time with CMU where he coached under Jordan Mincy for two seasons. In his first season with the Dolphins, he helped lead the team to a 21-win season and advanced to the ASUN final where it narrowly fell to Bellarmine. That season, he was key in the development of ASUN First Teamer Kevion Nolan.

Cherry also has experience as a Division I head coach, having spent nine years at the helm at High Point University. During his stint, he guided the Panthers to four-consecutive Big South regular season championships from 2013-16. At the time, High Point was one of four programs in the nation to win four-straight regular season titles during that stretch. The Panthers made the postseason in four-consecutive seasons, including two NIT appearances under his direction. Cherry was named the Big South Coach of the Year in 2014.

Prior to taking over at High Point, Cherry was an assistant coach at Western Kentucky University under Derrin Horn and followed him to South Carolina as the head assistant where he earned an SEC Eastern Division title and made an appearance in the NIT with the Gamecocks.

While with the Hilltoppers, the squad reached new heights, earning a No. 23 national ranking and making a run to the NCAA Sweet Sixteen as a No. 12 seed.

Before WKU, he coached a total of seven seasons across two stints at George Mason under storied coach Jim Larranaga.

During his playing career, he played one season of pro basketball for the AEL Basketball Club in Limassol, Cyprus after lettering for four seasons at North Carolina where he served as a team captain his senior season. While he was a Tarheel, Cherry played in the NCAA Sweet 16 every year, made two NCAA Final Four appearances and captured the 1993 NCAA Title his senior season. All told, teams that he has coached and played for have made 13 postseason appearances, including seven NCAA Tournaments, four NIT appearances and two CIT appearances.

Cherry is a 1993 graduate of North Carolina with a degree in business administration. He and his wife, Cortney have one son, Brody.
