Chris Mack Adds Former Rhode Island Assistant To His Staff at Xavier

Xavier University head basketball coach Chris Mack announced today that Luke Murray has been hired to fill the assistant coaching vacancy on his staff. Murray, who spent the past two seasons as an assistant to Dan Hurley at Rhode Island, has also spent time on the staffs at Towson, Wagner and Arizona.

“I am really excited to announce the addition of Luke Murray to our coaching staff,” said Mack. “Luke is one of the top young assistant coaches in America. His efforts recently at Towson and URI have demonstrated his ability to both attract talented players and coach them successfully. I have known Luke for a number of years and it is evident he has a passion for Xavier Basketball.”

Murray enjoyed a successful 2014-15 season at Rhode Island. The Rams finished 23-10 overall and tied for second in the Atlantic 10 Conference at 13-5. URI earned a postseason berth in the National Invitation Tournament and advanced to the second round.

Murray joined the Rhody staff in 2013 after spending the previous two seasons as an assistant coach at Towson under Pat Skerry.  While at Towson in 2012-13, he helped orchestrate of one of college basketball’s greatest turnarounds.  The Tigers set an NCAA record for the greatest one-season improvement, going from a one-win campaign in 2011-12 to an 18-13 mark and a second-place finish in the CAA in 2012-13.

While at Towson, Murray was an integral part in bringing in the top-rated recruiting class in the CAA for 2012-13, including 2013 CAA Player of the Year Jerrelle Benimon.

Prior to joining the staff at Towson, he spent the 2010-11 season as an assistant under Hurley at Wagner College in Staten Island, N.Y.  In the 2009-10 season, Murray served as a graduate assistant at the University of Arizona staff under former Xavier head coach Sean Miller, while working on his master’s degree in educational psychology. Murray broke into the collegiate coaching field as the director of basketball operations at Quinnipiac in the 2007-08 season.Murray, a native of Palisades, N.Y., is a 2007 Fairfield graduate with a degree in sociology. His father, Bill, is an Emmy and Golden Globe winning comedian and actor.
