Christopher Newport University Director of Athletics Kyle McMullin and Men’s Basketball Head Coach John Krikorian today announced the hiring of MAURICE SUMTER as assistant coach.

In addition, LOGAN MILLER, a member of the Captains squad for the last five years, has also been added to the staff for the upcoming campaign. Sumter and Miller will join ROLAND ROSS, who will be heading into his 36th season on the Captains bench.

“We have been fortunate to have had great assistants here who have left the program better than they found it, and we believe Maurice and Logan will do the same,” Krikorian said. “Maurice’s playing experience will be of significant value on the court and his deep recruiting ties in the state of Virginia should pay dividends immediately.  Logan has been part of everything we do here at CNU as a recruit, a student, and an athlete.  He knows our culture and is committed to advancing it.  He has a bright future in coaching and we are thrilled to have him on the sidelines this season.”

Maurice Sumter spent the last three seasons assisting at Virginia State University, where he was involved with player development as a front court position coach. His squad produced All-Americans in back to back seasons, and both went on to play professionally in Europe. He also was heavily involved in recruiting, day to day and travel operations, and administrative duties.

A Norfolk, Virginia, native by way of Alexandria, Virginia, Sumter was part of the very successful T.C. Williams High School program. In his time at T.C. Williams, he received numerous honors… including All-District Player of the Year, 1st team All-Region, and All- Metropolitan team in the D.C. area. He also led his team to a 25-4 Record and a Regional Semi-final appearance.

Sumter continued his playing career at Longwood University and was the first ever Division I men’s basketball recruit in school history.  Sumter went head to head with more than 15 eventual NBA players. In his junior and senior seasons, he led the team in scoring, steals, and was second in rebounding and blocks. In both seasons he was named first team All-Independent and third team All-State. He was also named Male Athlete of the Year at Longwood University, and was selected one of the top five players of all time in Longwood’s history by ESPN. Sumter finished his impressive career in the top five all time in scoring, rebounding, assists, steals, and blocks. After completing his career at Longwood, Sumter played three years professionally…making stops in Holland, Portugal, and Macedonia.

Sumter spent one season, 2016-17, as an assistant coach at Harcum Junior College, where his squad recorded a 22-9 record and a regular season conference championship. Sumter was also a volunteer assistant at Old Dominion University in 2015 and Shaw University in North Carolina in 2014.  He began his coaching career and spent four seasons as assistant coach at Indian River High School in Chesapeake, Virginia. He also spent two summers with the Adidas Gauntlet Powerhouse Team Loaded (NC), where he assisted in coaching and recruited some of the top ranked high school players in the country.

Logan Miller is a native of Manassas, Va., and graduated from Christopher Newport in May with a bachelor’s degree in communications. Miller was a member of the Captains squad for the last five seasons, including a redshirt 2016-17 campaign that ended due to injury.

Miller returned to the squad in 2017-18 and saw action in 15 games and also contributed as a senior last year seeing time in 16 games. In all, the guard saw time in 64 games with Christopher Newport, and was a member of the first two Final Four squads in school history.

The Captains are scheduled to begin practice next week and will begin their 53rd season, and tenth with John Krikorian leading the way, on Saturday, November 9, 2019. Christopher Newport will play Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore to open the new season.
