Chuck Moore Resigns as Head Basketball Coach and AD at Richard Bland College

Richard Bland College Director of Athletics and Men’s Basketball Head Coach Chuck Moore has announced his resignation, effective June 30, to pursue other professional opportunities.  Moore has been in the positions since 2012, resurrecting the NJCAA Division II athletics program that now includes men’s basketball, men’s soccer, softball, women’s volleyball as well as men’s and women’s golf.  As the men’s basketball head coach, he re-built the program following a 20-year hiatus from the sport.

Moore guided Richard Bland to a first-place finish in the 2016-17 VaSID Two-Year College All-Sports Survey with an overall record of 67-34-2 (.660).  Moore led Richard Bland to the 2015 NJCAA Division II Men’s Basketball National Championship among two Final Four appearances (2015, 2017), and Statesmen Athletics has claimed three Region 10 Tournament titles (men’s basketball-2, men’s soccer-1) as well as three Region 10 regular season championships (softball-2, men’s soccer-1).  Richard Bland student-athletes have garnered numerous honors, including the two All-Americans in men’s basketball, as well as Region 10 players of the year in men’s basketball and softball, along with a combined 55 All-Region selections, while three golfers have qualified for their respective National Tournaments.  Richard Bland student-athletes excel in the classroom, as well, placing 12 student-athletes on the prestigious 2016-17 NJCAA All-Academic Teams, while a record 36 Statesmen attained a GPA of 3.0 or higher during the 2017 Fall Semester.

“Leaving Richard Bland will be one of the most difficult things I’ll probably ever have to endure, especially at this point in my career,” said Moore.  “I can’t thank Dr. Sydow enough for entrusting me to start this athletics department from scratch, and giving me the support to build a national caliber program that has impacted the lives of over 300 student-athletes.  I look forward to what God has in store for me for my future opportunities.  I wanted to make sure that I gave the school enough time to make decisions on leadership roles so that there will be a seamless transition.  My time here has been one that I will always value, and I will always cherish the relationships I’ve made with my coaching staff and student-athletes.  I hope that the Statesmen family success continues for many more years.”

“Chuck led the re-building of Statesmen Athletics following a 20-year dormancy, and his accomplishments since 2012 have been remarkable,” said Richard Bland President Debbie L. Sydow, Ph.D.  “In addition to recruiting student-athletes who have excelled academically, multiple teams have won both regional and national championships.  The talented and dedicated athletic staff assembled by him has provided a supportive environment for student-athletes, enabling them to excel both in their sport of choice and in the classroom.  Chuck is to be commended for creating and executing an enduring vision for Statesmen Athletics, and we wish him great success, both personally and professionally.”

Moore has an outstanding overall record of 122-38 (.763) over the past five seasons, including 69-23 (.750) in Region 10, while an even more impressive 61-9 (.871) at home since 2013-14.  He has led the program to a pair of 30-win seasons among three 25-win campaigns, earning NJCAA Division II Top 20 national rankings in each of the five seasons.  Moore’s debut season in the 2013-14 was outstanding, leading the Statesmen to a record of 27-4, while ranked No. 1 in the national poll.  This year’s squad is currently 18-7 overall, including 12-5 in Region 10 with three regular season games and the post-season remaining.

In just his second year, Moore led Richard Bland to the 2014-15 NJCAA Division II National Championship with a school-record of 32-4, including the Region 10 Tournament Championship.  He was named the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) National Junior College Coach of the Year, an award that encompassed all JUCO Divisions. In addition, Moore was named the Spalding NJCAA Division II Coach of the Year, the Coach of the 2015 NJCAA Division II Tournament, the NJCAA District 6 Coach of the Year and the Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) College Division Coach of the Year.

Moore led Richard Bland to an overall record of 30-6 during 2016-17, making their second NJCAA DII National Tournament Final Four appearance in three years, after winning the Region 10 Tournament Championship.  He was named the 2017 NJCAA District 15 Coach of the Year.

Moore has coached two NJCAA Division II All-Americans at Richard Bland, including Tavon Mealy (2014-15, First Team) and Jaquan Wooten (2016-17, Second Team), while Mealy (2015), Wooten (2017), Averyl Ugba (2015, MVP) and LeQuan Thomas (2015) were NJCAA Division II National Championship All-Tournament Team selections.  Ugba is currently averaging 15.1 points and 8.0 rebounds as a fifth-year graduate transfer at NCAA Division I Ohio Valley Conference (OVC) member Austin Peay State University (15-12), where he’s earned three OVC Player of the Week and seven OVC Newcomer of the Week honors.  The Statesmen have had 11 All-Region 10 honorees since 2013-14, including Mealy being named the Player of the year in 2014-15.

Moore began his collegiate coaching career at Patrick Henry Community College in Martinsville (2007-09), posting a record of 48-16, putting his overall collegiate coaching record at 170-54 (.759).  Patrick Henry was a perfect 16-0 in Region 10 in 2008-09, earning Moore Region 10 Coach of the Year honors.  His 2007-08 team won the VCCS State Championship, and Moore’s success with the Patriots earned him election into that college’s Hall of Fame.  Moore served as an assistant coach at Randolph-Macon College (2010-12), helping the Yellow Jackets compile a record of 46-12, while making two NCAA Division III National Tournament appearances and winning the 2011 ODAC Regular Season and Tournament Championships.

A native of Hampton, Moore is a graduate of Christopher Newport University and earned a Masters in Sports Management from American Public University.  He is the proud father of his 16-year old son Trey, who attends Life Christian Academy in Chester.

Moore will remain on the sidelines through the remainder of the season, while continuing to lead Statesmen Athletics through June, as well.

President Sydow indicated that a new head coach will be announced soon, and the search for a new Athletics Director will begin immediately.
