Claus out as Head Basketball Coach at Idaho

Idaho Director of Athletics Terry Gawlik announced that Vandal Men’s Basketball Coach Zac Claus has been relieved of his coaching duties, effective immediately. Tim Marrion will serve as acting head coach and lead the team through the remainder of the 2022-2023 season.

“I want to sincerely thank Zac and his family for their contributions to the men’s basketball program over the past eight seasons,” Gawlik said. “Zac took over an incredibly challenging situation and stewarded our program with integrity and class throughout his entire tenure. We wish him all the best in his future endeavors.”

Claus completes his head coaching career for the Vandals with a 28-88 overall record. He first joined Idaho as an assistant coach ahead of the 2015-16 season and spent four years as an assistant. In July 2019, he was named interim head coach, before earning the permanent role in February 2020.

Off the court, Claus’ teams were known to be excellent in the classroom. This past fall, the men’s basketball team achieved a 3.04 team GPA, tied for the second highest semester GPA on record. In 2021, Idaho was recognized with the Team Academic Excellence Award by the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC).

“Our new ICCU Arena should elevate Idaho to consistently competing at the top of the Big Sky Conference,” Gawlik said. “As we look to the future, we will focus on finding a dynamic coach to bring championship-caliber basketball back to Moscow.

The University will launch a national search for a new head coach for the men’s basketball program immediately. Bowlsby Sports Advisors has been retained to assist with the search. All inquiries and recommendations should be directed to Kyle Bowlsby at [email protected]

Gawlik will be available for questions at the Idaho Athletics weekly press conference on Wednesday.
