The Jacksonville Dolphins have officially announced the hiring of former FGCU standout and Stetson assistant coach Brett Comer.
Comer joins the Dolphins as an assistant coach and will help to round out the JU coaching staff after the departure of associate head coach Michael Fly.
The former FGCU star joined Stetson in 2022 and helped see the Hatters to the NCAA Tournament in 2023-24. Previously, Comer worked his way up at Dayton where he was hired as a graduate assistant in 2018 and finished as the Flyers’ Director of Basketball Operations in 2021.
“Brett Comer’s success as a player and coach speaks for itself by winning an ASUN title as a coach and a player,” head coach Jordan Mincy said. “Brett’s leadership while at Stetson helped produce one of the most dynamic and high-scoring teams in the ASUN. Also, his ability to develop game plans, adapt real-time and maximize his players’ strengths is exactly what we need. Brett is a future star in this profession.”
Comer played college ball at Florida Gulf Coast where he was a key member of the Eagles’ squad. He as a two-time All-ASUN selection and finished top-25 all time in NCAA career assists.
In 2013, Comer was named the Atlantic Sun Tournament MVP during FGCU’s historic run to the NCAA Tournament where Gulf Coast picked up the nickname ‘Dunk City.’ Comer’s 244 assists that year — helping lead FGCU as the first 15 seed to ever reach the Sweet 16 — was second all-time in ASUN history.
Comer began coaching at Indiana University of Pennsylvania as a volunteer assistant in 2015. He was then hired as a GA at Dayton in 2017 before returning to the ASUN with the Hatters.
High level play and winning follows Comer, as at Dayton he helped Obi Toppin become the No. 8 overall selection in the NBA Draft and helped Stetson to an NCAA Tournament berth for the first time as a Division 1 program.
“Adding Brett will allow us to continue to ascend as a consistent contender in the ASUN,” athletic director Alex Ricker-Gilbert said. “Winning follows Brett around wherever he goes, and we are so glad to have him on our side. Comer’s time at FGCU and Stetson helped revolutionize the Atlantic Sun, and we are hoping he can bring the same to Jacksonville.”
