Garvin McAlister and Sam Moser have been named assistant men’s basketball coaches at Connecticut College. They replace Dan Kane who was recently named head men’s basketball coach and Athletic Director at the University of Maine Presque Isle, and Shawn Hallahan who, after four years at Conn, left the college ranks to work in the private sector and coach in high school.

Connecticut College head men’s basketball coach Tom Satran is thankful to both Kane and Hallahan for their work with the program.

“Danny is one of the hardest and most consistent workers I’ve had as an assistant,” said Satran. “He did a great, great job for us and is entirely deserving of his new position. Shawn was key to our team’s improvement over the past few seasons. His work in scouting, coaching and recruiting was exemplary but he was also really beloved by our players, coaches and managers. We will really miss him.”

McAlister, a native of nearby Norwich, Connecticut, comes to Connecticut College after working as an assistant men’s basketball coach at Nichols College. At Nichols, he helped coach the Bison to their first NCAA Tournament berth in program history. Before coaching at Nichols, McAlister served as an assistant with the Western Connecticut State women’s program.

Furthermore, McAlister also works as a scout and practice player for the Connecticut Sun of the WNBA. He graduated from Post University in 2011 and was a four-year member of the men’s basketball team at the institution. On the scholastic level, McAlister played at Norwich Free Academy and was a key contributor on a 24-1 team coached by Neal Curland.

Satran welcomes McAlister’s hiring, commenting, “Garvin hit the ground running this summer by working camps, recruiting and assisting in preparation for the upcoming season. He is a great addition to our program, and our student athletes are lucky to have him.”

Moser comes to Connecticut College after finishing his first year as the head varsity boys basketball coach at Weston High School in Weston, Connecticut. In one season at Weston, Moser led the team to a 13-7 record and helped the program reach the Elite 8 of the state tournament. Moser’s team was also honored with the IAABO Board #9 Sportsmanship Award. Prior to being Weston’s head coach, Moser was an assistant at Tolland High School.

In addition, Moser also works as a Group Benefits Regional Account Underwriter at The Hartford Insurance company in Hartford, Connecticut. He graduated from the University of Connecticut in 2013 with a degree in Actuarial Science.

Coach Satran is also enthusiastic about Moser, noting, “Sam is an experienced coach who can immediately contribute to our players’ on court development and the team’s practice routine. I am pleased he has decided to begin his college coaching career with us.”

Connecticut College opens up its 2017-18 campaign when it faces Lyndon State as part of the Coaches vs. Cancer Tip-Off Classic at Coast Guard on Saturday, Nov. 18 at 6:00 p.m.
