D2 DIRT: Alaska Fairbanks head basketball coach placed on leave

Story: Adam Nelson (@HD_DirtKing)

D2 University of Alaska Fairbanks head men’s basketball coach Greg Sparling has been placed on leave, and has been replaced on an interim basis by current assistant coach Drew Hedman. Sparling has been away from the team since mid-December, with Hedman at the helm for the past seven games (1-7).

When reached for comment, Alaska Fairbanks officials said that they could not share any information on this personnel matter.

Sparling is in his sixth season as the Nanooks head coach, where he has gone 28-76 (.269). Alaska had 17 men’s basketball wins vacated during Sparling’s first two seasons due to the school improperly certifying student-athletes.

Before being hired at Alaska, Sparling spent 24 seasons as the head coach at Central Washington, where he went 385-253-1 (.603).
