D2 Simon Fraser opens

Simon Fraser University has decided on a change in the direction of the men’s basketball program and has parted ways with head coach Steve Hanson.

“SFU has great aspirations for our men’s basketball program as part of the NCAA Div II,” says Luc Simard, executive director of SFU Athletics and Recreation. “We expect to compete regularly in post-season play.

“The university has continued to invest in our men’s basketball program, adding staff and increasing support for student-athletes. With recruitment for the 2025-2026 season about to get underway, we felt the time was right to make this decision and begin our search for a new head coach.

“We want to thank Steve for his work and commitment and his passion for SFU basketball. We wish him all the best in his future endeavours.”

Steve took over the role of head coach in the 2016-2017 season and held an overall record of 78-146, going 41-109 in the NCAA Div II Great Northwest Athletic Conference. The university will begin a national search for a new head coach for men’s basketball on Monday.
