Colorado College men’s basketball head coach Jeff Conarroe announced the hiring of Cam McKinney as CC’s new assistant coach. McKinney brings premier coaching and playing experience, as well as years of expertise in player development, from the high school to the Division III and Division I levels.
“I am very excited to add Cam to our staff,” Conarroe said. “His diverse experiences both as a player and a coach are something that I believe will continue to distinguish our program. Cam is a product of the block plan, having graduated from Cornell College in Iowa and made it clear throughout our process that the educational value proposition here at Colorado College was a priority for him.”
McKinney most recently served as the Assistant Director of Basketball Operations at Troy University in the Sun Belt Conference. Last season, the Trojans finished with a 23-11 record and earned a trip to the NCAA Tournament after winning the Sun Belt Conference Tournament.
The Trojans also won the Sun Belt regular season title, and McKinney helped coach Tayton Conerway, who was named the conference Player of the Year.
“I’m incredibly excited to be at Colorado College and to work alongside Coach Jeff Conarroe & Derrick Rodgers,” McKinney said. “This is a special place with a strong vision, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to contribute to the program’s continued growth both on and off the court.”
His collegiate coaching career began at his alma mater, Cornell College in Mount Vernon, Iowa. McKinney was the assistant coach for the Rams for the 2022-23 season before becoming the head coach at Carrollwood Day School in Tampa, Florida.
As a player during the 2021-22 season, McKinney helped lead Cornell to a Midwest Conference championship and a berth in the Division III NCAA Tournament. The following season, the Rams advanced to the MWC Championship game and concluded the season with a 15-12 record.
“He is a winner and will add to our Championship Culture,” Conarroe said. “Most importantly, Cam identifies with our vision for this program, and we have many shared values on and off the court. He embodies the love, humility and courage we hope our team and program exhibit consistently.”
McKinney joins Conarroe and assistant coach Derrick Rogers, who coached at Division 1 Cal Baptist and played in the West Coast Conference at the University of Portland; all three coaches at CC have experience at the Division 1 level.
“With Coach Rodgers and Coach McKinney, I expect us to have a very strong and unified staff that will work tirelessly to support the mission and leadership at Colorado College,” Conarroe said.
