Trinity University proudly announces the hiring of Marwan Elrakabawy as the new Head Coach for the men’s basketball team.
Coach Elrakabawy joins Trinity following a stellar six-year tenure as the Head Coach at Schreiner University (TX), where he set school records for all-time wins and winning percentage, guided the program to the second Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) championship and NCAA Tournament berth in school history, and earned 2022 SCAC Coach of the Year honors.
Trinity University’s Associate Vice President and Director of Athletics, Bob King, praised Coach Elrakabawy’s leadership: “Marwan’s passion for mentoring student-athletes, his ability to build winning programs, and his commitment to excellence make him the ideal leader for Trinity’s men’s basketball program. His accomplishments speak for themselves, and we are thrilled to welcome him to the Tiger family.”
Coach Elrakabawy brings a wealth of coaching experience and a track record of academic and athletic excellence. His teams consistently ranked among the top in defensive field goal percentage, scoring, and assists, while recruiting and mentoring multiple All-SCAC honorees, including Kamden Ross, the two-time SCAC Player of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year, and an NABC All-American. Under his leadership, Schreiner achieved a 63-46 record over the last five seasons, secured its second-ever NCAA Tournament appearance, and upheld a 3.2+ GPA program-wide, earning NABC Team of Excellence recognition each year.
“Trinity is a special place,” said Coach Elrakabawy. “It challenges and empowers its student athletes to pursue excellence in the classroom and on the court. On top of that, a big school network and resources are set in a close-knit small-school environment. I am privileged and grateful for the confidence placed in me to lead one of the premier basketball programs at one of the pinnacle universities in the country. I want to thank the administrators, staff, and student-athletes at Schreiner, all of whom were instrumental in shaping my career over these past eight years. I also want to thank Bob King and the rest of the search committee at Trinity for their support. I will work tirelessly with our athletics staff, administrators, alumni, and the outstanding student-athletes attracted by this place, to build strong teams of men who will work and compete at the highest levels.”
Prior to becoming the Head Coach, Coach Elrakabawy served two seasons as an assistant coach at Schreiner, one year each at fellow SCAC school Southwestern University (TX), and NCAA Division II St. Edward’s University (TX). He also spent one year as an assistant coach at Gallaudet University (MD) and also worked two different stints at the Texas School for the Deaf in Austin, Texas.
Coach Elrakabawy graduated with his bachelor’s degree from the University of Texas at Austin and his J.D. with Honors from the University of Texas School of Law. He is joined in this new role by his wife Erin and their three children: Noah (11), Raef (9), and Imogene (3).
