D3 NEWS: Newton named Head Basketball Coach at Maine Farmington

University of Maine at Farmington Director of Athletics Jamie Beaudoin is pleased to announce the hiring of Quinn Newton as the 7th Head Men’s Basketball Coach in the program’s modern era.

“We are extremely excited to welcome Quinn and his family to Farmington,” Beaudoin said. “The men’s basketball program at Farmington has a storied history, and it was apparent to me and the rest of the search committee that Quinn possesses all the qualities we are looking for in the next leader of our program. Quinn has gained invaluable coaching experience at several high-level Division III programs and has a track record of bringing high-level student-athletes to every school he has been affiliated with. His motivation and passion for basketball are abundantly clear, and his desire to compete and connect with the team is crucial in providing them with a meaningful student-athlete experience.”

Newton began his coaching and player development career in the summer of 2017, assisting in the training of NBA and WNBA athletes such as Paul George, Diana Taurasi, and Anthony Davis, among others, as an on-court player development and strength and conditioning coach for Integrity Hoops.

After graduating from Saint Joseph’s College of Maine in the spring of 2018, Newton was hired as an Assistant Coach at Huntingdon College in Montgomery, Alabama. He helped lead the team to their first conference tournament in five years.

Following his time at Huntingdon, Newton was hired as an Assistant Coach and Head Strength and Conditioning Coach at Hampden-Sydney College in Hampden-Sydney, Virginia. Newton played a key role in recruiting and helping to develop numerous Hampden-Sydney athletes who competed in the Division III National Championship this past season.

After a COVID-shortened 2020-2021 season, Newton returned to Maine, taking an Assistant Coach position at the University of Southern Maine under Head Coach Rob Sanicola, who Newton played for at Saint Joe’s. Newton served as the Recruiting Coordinator for the Huskies and helped lead them to their first Little East Conference playoff victory in nine seasons.

Following one season at USM, Newton was hired as an Assistant Coach at Bates College, where he has been for the past two seasons. He also served as the Recruiting Coordinator and the Head Strength and Conditioning Coach for the Bobcats. Newton coached the NESCAC’s leading scorer during the 2022-2023 season and helped land the 2023-2024 NESCAC Rookie of the Year as part of their most recent recruiting class.

As a player at Saint Joseph’s, Newton was a four-year starter and 1,000-point scorer for the Monks, starting in all 102 games that he appeared in. For his career, Newton averaged 9.9 points and 5.2 rebounds per game while shooting 45.6 percent from the floor and helping lead the Monks to a playoff bid in each of his four seasons. Newton was named the Maine Men’s Basketball Coaches and Writers Association (MMBCWA) Rookie of the Year during the 2014-2015 season.

“I’d first like to thank Athletic Director Jamie Beaudoin and the rest of the hiring committee for entrusting me to lead this program. UMF has such a rich history of excellence that I am excited to continue to build upon,” Newton said.

Born and raised in Maine and a graduate of Thornton Academy in Saco, Maine, Newton is excited to continue to lay roots in his home state. “Maine is home for me. I am truly looking forward to fully immersing myself and my family into the Farmington community,” Newton added.

Newton will inherit a young, talented roster that lost just one player to graduation a season ago. The Beavers concluded their 2023-24 season with an 18-9 record, falling to Husson University in overtime of a North Atlantic Conference (NAC) semifinal.

The roster the Beavers return includes 3rd Team All-Conference and MMBCWA All-Defensive Team honoree Jordan Anthony (Farmington, Conn.), the program record holder in three-pointers made in a single season, Simon Chadbourne (Portland, Maine), key veteran leaders Dylan Griffin (Saco, Maine) and Will Harriman (Biddeford, Maine), as well as rising sophomores Brock Flagg (Brewer, Maine) and Jason Reynolds (Winslow, Maine), who played key roles on last year’s 18-win team.

Under Newton’s direction, the Beavers will look to regain glory at the top of the North Atlantic Conference, aiming for their first Conference Championship since 2010.
