D3 NEWS: University of Chicago adds Quinn as Assistant Basketball Coach

The University of Chicago Department of Athletics and Recreation has named Danny Quinn as Assistant Men’s Basketball Coach.

Quinn joins the Maroons after serving as an assistant basketball coach at Saint John’s College in Minnesota for the past four seasons. He helped lead the Johnnies to a pair of MIAC Regular-Season Championships in 2024 and 2025, and the team reached the NCAA Tournament in 2025 after winning the MIAC Tournament. In the 2025 NCAA Tournament, St. John’s (MN) traveled to the University of Chicago where they took down the Maroons 72-71 in the opening round of the tournament. The Johnnies reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament for just the fifth time in program before, but they fell to Illinois Wesleyan 75-73 on a game-winning shot in the final seconds in the second round.

Quinn coached nine 1st-Team MIAC selections in his four years in Collegeville, including the 2025 MIAC Offensive Player of the Year, Ryan Thissen. The St. John’s team also brought in three All-Region selections, three Academic All-America honors, and one All-America selection under Quinn.

“I am incredibly grateful to Coach McGrath for the opportunity to join the University of Chicago and become a part of this proud program,” said Quinn. “I am extremely thankful for the coaches, players and people who have invested in me throughout my career and helped prepare me for an opportunity like this. I couldn’t be more excited about what is ahead at UChicago. The combination of the university’s academic excellence, the tradition of the basketball program, and the opportunity to be back in Chicago made this a really special opportunity for me and my family. I’m excited to get to work and chase championships!”

Prior to joining St. John’s (MN), Quinn hopped around the midwest, coaching for one season at Saint Mary’s (MN) and Loras College, and he spent one year as a graduate assistant coach at La Verne in the 2019-20 season.

“Danny understands what it takes to be successful in Division III basketball,” said Head Men’s Basketball Coach, Mike McGrath. ” I’m excited to add an experienced coach who brings a different perspective to our staff, and his time at St. John’s (MN) and his other coaching stops have prepared him to make a real impact on our program. He brings a strong understanding of the game, and I am excited to see what he adds to our staff and our players.”

Quinn earned his bacehlor’s degree in finance from Loras College in 2017, and he was a four-year basketball player for the Duhawks. He helped lead Loras to their first Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) championship in 10 years, starting all 26 games and averaging 8.9 points, 5.1 rebounds and 1.7 assists per contest during his final season in Dubuque.

The University of Chicago men’s basketball team will open its 2026-27 season on Sunday, November 8, as the Maroons host Harvard University for their season opener at the Ratner Athletic Center.
