Daily Dirt – 3/21/16

Snow day in Boston today…all four kids are at home. I thought spring was here?!?! Anyway, here are a bunch of things that I’ve heard while getting ready to watch our 6th episode in a row of the Fresh Prince of Bel Air

  • TCU: Obviously Pitt head coach Jamie Dixon is the name that’s on fire here. The former TCU guard (1984-87) has been long rumored as a target for the Horned Frogs.  He is currently under contract through 2023 at Pitt with a monster buyout in place.  Some say that this will finally be the year that TCU pony’s up the money and lands him.  If not, look for Virginia Tech head coach Buzz Williams to be next in line.  He is a Texas native who has been on the staff’s of three other Texas schools (Texas A&M, UT-Arlington, and Texas A&M-Kingsville).
  • Oklahoma State: No shocker here…top two guys appear to be Stephen F. Austin head coach Brad Underwood and Little Rock head coach Chris Beard. The 3rd guy looming is obviously former Cowboy and current CBS analyst Doug Gottleib. It will be interesting to see how this one plays out…
  • St. Louis: Two great sources have now mentioned Florida Gulf Coast head coach Joe Dooley’s name surrounding this one.  The former Kansas assistant has won 21+ games in each of his three seasons at FGCU.  He also spent four seasons as the head coach at East Carolina (57-52, 1995-99).
  • Drexel: Been getting great stuff here lately. On Saturday, I mentioned Army head coach Zach Spiker being involved here.  I have now also heard Lehigh head coach Dr. Brett Reed’s name come up multiple times with this search.  Reed is best known for his 27-8 season back in 2012 where Lehigh knocked off Duke in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.  As I said when this search started, Drexel was looking for someone from an academic background – both of these guys, as well as Wagner’s Bashir Mason (Daily Dirt 3/14/16) fit that mold.
  • North Texas: Head coach Tony Benford has received a vote of confidence from AD Rick Villarreal and will return for his fourth season.  UNT struggled to a 12-20 record this past season, giving Benford a 54-73 overall during time at the school.  Apparently UNT has a very strong group heading into next season.

I’ve got a fairly large list at Southern Utah, working on some good Portland stuff, and more DII stuff on the way…
