Daily Dirt – 3/28/16

What a wild Easter Weekend – Stallings to Pitt (Panther fans want to burn the city), Beard to UNLV (well done parlaying a 30-5 season into a better gig), and Dunleavy Sr. to Tulane (a lot of head scratching here).  I think the best hiring over the weekend was the one that had the least fanfare – Rick Stansbury to WKU…he can flat out coach, and has the #’s to back it up!  Well done Hilltoppers.

With the Final Four fast approaching, expect a flurry of hirings this week.  Here are a few things that I’ve heard while picking on some leftover ham…

  • New name at Saint Louis – Boise State head coach Leon Rice.  Apparently he met with SLU officials this weekend and is definitely in the mix here.  He is coming off of his 4th straight 20 win season at BSU (20-12), and has won 122 games during his six years at the school.  Before becoming the Broncos’ head coach, he spent 11-seasons as an assistant to Mark Few at Gonzaga.
  • Early “hot” name at Stephen F. Austin is Mike Boynton.  He’s got a lot going for him on this one…he has been on Brad Underwood’s staff at SFA for the past three seasons (obviously they have been very successful), and he played at South Carolina (for Eddie Fogler who happens to be running the search).  More on this one as I hear it.
  • Multiple sources keep mentioning Oklahoma assistant Steve Henson’s name surrounding the UTSA job.  The Sooners are currently Final Four bound, but I have heard that it has not prevented contact between UTSA and Henson. The former Kansas State standout has been on Lon Kruger’s staff at OU, UNLV, Illinois, and worked with him in the NBA.

I have some pretty good info on a few DII searches that I expect to have up later this afternoon.
