Headed to Charlotte for the week. Here are a few things that I’ve heard as I get ready to head to the airport…
Some names making the rounds at CSUN include Chris Acker (assistant coach San Diego State), Flynn Clayman (former interim head coach Southern Utah, Wayne Hunter (assistant coach Washington State), Andy Newman (head coach, Cal State San Bernardino head coach. I have not heard a timeline here yet.
With Austin Claunch headed to Alabama as an assistant, there are a bunch of names swirling at Nicholls State. The two with the most traction early are Loyola Chicago assistant Amorrow Morgan (a former Nicholls State assistant), and Pearl River CC head coach Chris Oney (also a former Nicholls State assistant). More names floating out there, but seem to be the top two for now.
Word on the street is that UMass assistant Derek Kellogg is in the mix to replace Alan Huss on Greg McDermott’s staff at Creighton. Kellogg, a long-time John Calipari assistant, was also the head coach at LIU and his alma mater UMass. McDermott is looking to replace Huss, who became the head coach at High Point a few weeks ago.
Oregon assistant Armon Gates is on the move and will land at Oklahoma according to Oregon Live. Last season was Gates’ first at Oregon, and he has also worked at Nebraska, Florida, Northwestern, Loyola Chicago, TCU, Kent State and Western Kentucky. More on this once it becomes official.
I can confirm that Elwyn McRoy is no longer an assistant coach at Coastal Carolina. He had been on Cliff Ellis’ staff for the past four seasons.
I have heard that Cinco Boone is in the mix to join the staff at Abilene Christian. Boone spent last season as an assistant at Texas Arlington following a seven year run as the head coach at D2 Angelo State. More on this one as I hear it.
UIC’s Director of Scouting Marlon London is headed to Eastern Illinois as an assistant coach. Last season was London’s first at UIC, after spending four seasons as the associate head coach at D3 North Park University.
In case you missed it from this weekend – Siena’s Darius Theus is headed back to his alma mater VCU to become an assistant on Ryan Odom’s new staff. More HERE.
It sounds like there are four finalists at D2 Southern Nazarene. The names I’ve heard are all head coaches; A D2 head coach from California, an NAIA head coach from the deep south, and two NAIA head coaches from the Southwest. More on this when one shortly.
I have heard that Zoom interviews will get underway this week at NAIA LSU Alexandria. No names yet, but it sounds like there are five coaches who will be interviewing. Working on names now.
Sounds like a New England D3 has opened. Working to confirm that this am.
