DAILY DIRT – 4/18/24

Story: Adam Nelson (@HD_DirtKing)

Headed out of Charlotte today – next stop Montreal. Should be interesting…

Trying to catch-up on a few quick things that I’ve heard:

Nelson Terroba will join Rob Lanier’s new staff at Rice as an assistant. The Texas native has most recently been the head coach of the Head Coach Calgary Surge (CEBL). He is also spent four seasons with the Texas Legends (NBA G-League) as an assistant coach and is the founder of Texas based Hoops 101 Basketball. An official announcement is expected shortly.

I have heard that North Carolina Central assistant Garrett Bridges is on the move, and expected to join the staff at Pacific. Bridges has been at NCCU since 2019, and was a graduate assistant at Houston before that. More on this one once it becomes official.

Chris Shumate has departed the staff at Georgia Southern and sounds like he will end up with Andy Kennedy at UAB. Shumate had been at GSU for the past five seasons, and also worked at Cincinnati, Southern Miss, Tennessee, Western Kentucky and Northern Kentucky.

Terry Weigrand and and Andy Allison will not return to the basketball staff at Duquesne. Weigrand had been an assistant to former head coach Keith Dambrot for the past 20+ years at Duquesne, Akron and Ashland. Allison had served as the as the Chief of Staff for the Dukes for the past three seasons.

Looks like Tony Bland is headed to the University of Washington as the associate head coach. Bland, a former assistant at USC, has most recently been serving as the head coach at St. Bernard HS in Playa Del Rey, CA. Back in 2017, Bland was jammed up in the 2017 FBI investigation that rocked college basketball. Since then, he had been working with local youths in the LA area and coaching at St. Bernard.

Sounds like current Hutchinson CC associate head coach Eric Nitsche is the leader to take over the program following the departure of former head coach Tommy DeSalme. Nitsche has been at Hutch for the past three seasons, and has also been an assistant at Jayhawk foes Cowley College, and Kansas City Kansas CC. At least one former D1 head coach trying to get involved with this one as well. More on this search as I hear it.
