Daily Dirt – 4/16/15

A few things that I’ve heard so far today…

  • I have heard from a great source that VMI assistants Daniel Willis and Ryan Mattocks will be headed to The Citadel with Duggar Baucom.  Willis has been with Baucom for the past ten seasons – eight at VMI, and two Tusculum. Mattocks joined the VMI staff in 2012 after serving as a manager at Duke.
  • It seems like the last group at Western Oregon may be four, not three finalists.  Last week, I reported that I had heard the final three were, Mike Burns (former assistant at San Diego), Jim Shaw (assistant coach St. Mary’s), and Jeff Hironaka (associate head coach Portland State).  I have now heard from a great source that former Oregon standout Luke Jackson may be in this group.  Jackson is currently the head coach at NAIA Northwest Christian.  He was the 10th pick in the 2004 NBA Draft, and played parts of five seasons in the league.  It sounds like a decision here will be made shortly.
  • Speaking of Hironaka…his name is already popping up at recently opened Northwest Nazarene (ID).  This one just opened this week, but already starting to hear some other names as well.  More on this later in the week.
  • A follow-up from yesterday…I mentioned that Matthew “Mike” Smith was out at Lawson State (AL) (Daily Dirt III – 4/15/15). A hot name making the rounds now is current Jackson State assistant coach Phillip Shumpert.  He actually spent four seasons as the head coach at Lawson State before moving on to Southern Poly and then on to Jackson State.
  • Follow-up #2 from yesterday…Wallace CC-Selma:  It sounds like it is a done deal and a local HS coach has been hired. More here as it becomes official.
