Today’s Dirt…
• UAB head coach Jerod Haase is working quickly to replace Richie Riley (departed for Clemson). I have heard from a great source that the job was offered to (and turned down by) Belmont assistant James Strong. It seems like Haase wants someone who can recruit the Carolina’s, Georgia, and Florida. More on this as I hear it.
• Following up on my Georgia Tech Dirt from yesterday (http://www.hoopdirt.com/blog/968f730f/georgia-tech-dirt/…)… There are a few more names to add to the list as possible replacements for Billy Schmidt on Brian Gregory’s staff. The names that I have heard today are: Former Boston College head coach Steve Donahue, former LSU and UCLA assistant Korey McCray (big Atlanta Celtics ties), and Boston Celtics assistant John Carroll (former head coach at Duquesne. As I mentioned yesterday, it seems like Gregory wants a former head coach -5 out of the 6 guys that I have mentioned have been DI head coaches. I will keep you updated on this one.
• Two separate sources have now told me that SUNY Delhi head coach Rob Schoener has been offered the job at SUNY IT. Schoener has spent the past eight seasons at Delhi and has been named the Region III Coach of the Year in four of those seasons. He has also worked as an assistant at Monroe CC. Look for an official announcement any day.
• Former Illinois-Chicago assistant Donnie Kirksey is headed back to the prep level. He has become the head coach at Julian HS (Chicago). Before joining the UIC staff four years ago, Kirksey was the head coach at Hyde Park Academy (Chicago). He has also been an assistant at DePaul and Chicago State.
