DAILY DIRT: D1 staff’s starting to take shape

Story: Adam Nelson (@HD_DirtKing)

A bunch of new basketball staff’s starting to take shape over the past few days. Some I’ve mentioned already, some are new. Wanted to compile them all in one place:

Central Arkansas: Had this on Monday (DAILY DIRT), but wanted to add it to this list. New Central Arkansas head coach John Shulman has brought Max Shulman and Ezra Pinzur with him from D2 Alabama Huntsville. Max (John’s son) joined the UAH staff this past season following his playing career with the Chargers (he’s UAH’s all-time leader in 3’s made). Pinzur has been with Shulman at UAH for the past three seasons and also worked as a GA at Tennessee Tech.

Coastal Carolina: Mentioned this one earlier today (JUCO DIRT), but sounds like Salt Lake CC head coach Kyle Taylor will be added to the staff at Coastal Carolina. Taylor had been at SLCC for the past five seasons where he went 143-20, including a 30-4 (12-2) mark this past season. New Coastal head coach Justin Gray has already announced the additions of Jayson Gee as the associate head coach / chief of staff, Ryne Lightfoot as an assistant coach / defensive coordinator, and Zach Freesman as an assistant coach / offensive coordinator.

College of Charleston: New C of C HC Chris Mack is reportedly adding Chris Harriman to his new staff. Harriman spent last season at St. Louis (his second stint there), and has also worked at Cal, New Mexico, and Nebraska.

DePaul: Ohio State assistant (and Chicago native) will reportedly reunite with Chris Holtmann. DePaul has already hired former SIU head coach Bryan Mullins, and former Ohio State assistant and Miami (OH) head coach Jack Owens.

Florida Atlantic: I mentioned this one yesterday. All signs pointing to former Gannon head coach Jordan Fee joining John Jakus’ new staff at FAU. Fee went 32-3 in his only season at Gannon (they were 3-23 the previous year). He also was on staff at Nova Southeastern in 2021-22 when they won the D2 National Championship (36-0).

Gardner-Webb: I mentioned on Monday in the DAILY DIRT that Furman assistant Jake DeLaney was returning to Gardner-Webb. Sounds like that’s now a done deal. DeLaney has had two stints at GWU – 2015-17 as the video coordinator/GA, and spent 2019-23 as an assistant before joining the Furman staff prior to this past season.

Illinois Chicago: According to his X, Niagara assistant Kevin Devitt has joined Rob Ehsan’s staff at UIC. Devitt just wrapped up his 4th season at Niagara after spending four seasons as an assistant coach at UAB (where he worked for Ehsan).

Michigan: Former Oklahoma State head coach Mike Boynton is reportedly headed to Michigan where he will join new head coach Dusty May’s staff. Boynton had spent the past seven seasons at OSU where he went 119-109 (.522).

Siena: Also has this on Monday (DAILY DIRT), but wanted it on this list as well. Ben Lee will join Gerry McNamara’s new staff at Siena. Lee spent the past few years working for former Syracuse assistant Mike Hopkins at Washington – he served as a GA, DBO, and ended his tenure with the Huskies as an assistant coach. He is a NY native who played collegiately at Union College (NY).

Stanford: Oregon State assistant Eric Reveno will return to his alma mater as an assistant. Reveno was born in Stanford, CA, played at Stanford, and was an assistant there from 1997-2006. He also spent ten seasons as the head coach at Portland.

UT Martin: It’s been reported that new head coach Jeremy Shulman will add former McNeese head coach John Aiken, former Tallahassee head coach Mark White, Vanguard assistant Selle Hann (former assistant at Eastern Florida for Shulman), and EFSC assistants Nick Johnson and Truman Moore.
