Daily News & Notes – 12/18/20

Today’s news and notes from around the college basketball world…

  • Good article from the St. Louis Post Dispatch on SIUC head coach Bryan Mullins, and his assistant coach (and older brother) Brendan. “I never got to boss him around as a kid, that’s for sure,” said Bryan. “It’s enjoyable to be with him every single day. In the coaching profession, it’s so rare to be able to have this opportunity. You never know where you’re going to be. You can be across the country from each other. To be able to spend every day with him, have our parents and younger brother come down here, it’s an incredible situation.” More HERE.

  • Former St. John’s assistant Rico Hines has been promoted to Director of Player Development and Assistant Coach on Luke Walton’s Sacramento Kings staff. More HERE.

  • Following the death of UT Martin head coach Anthony Stewart, his son Parker, has decided to transfer from the Skyhawks program. He will now continue his career at Indiana. Hoosiers head coach Archie Miller released a statement which reads in part; “I think his most impressive accomplishment is the fact that he earned a bachelors and masters degree in four years. Our first priority is to get him settled in after Christmas and start the process of him returning full time as a basketball player. I know it has been a difficult time for the Stewart family but we welcome them as Parker looks to close out his college basketball career as a Hoosier.” More HERE.

  • We mentioned earlier this week that LSU associate head coach Bill Armstrong coached the Tigers vs Sam Houston State on Monday. A few things have also emerged. Will Wade has officially tested positive for COVID (he was initially listed as out with “COVID issues”), and LSU assistant coaches Tasmin Mitchell and Kevin Nickelberry also missed the SHSU game as they are being quarantined for contact tracing. No word on when any of them will return. More HERE.

  • University of Houston men’s basketball Coach Kelvin Sampson revealed Thursday that every single player on his roster, 15 to be exact, has at one time or another tested positive for the COVID this year. Some members of Sampson’s coaching staff have also tested positive, he said. More HERE.

  • The article on how college basketball programs are grappling with the coronavirus pandemic (Daily News 12/14) began with a description of Navy Coach Ed DeChellis and how the risks associated with contracting this disease are “always on my mind” because he is a 62-year-old diabetic stroke survivor and he is worried about keeping his team and himself safe. DeChellis is now taking heat in a Baltimore Sun commentary about his improper mask use. More HERE.

  • ICYMI: Villanova’s Jay Wright picked up win #600 on Wednesday. Wright now has 478 Villanova victories to go with 122 at Hofstra. More HERE.
