Daily News & Notes – 12/15/20

Today’s news & notes from around the college basketball coaching world…

  • University at Buffalo men’s basketball coach Jim Whitesell will miss the next few games. Whitesell came in close contact with an individual who tested positive for COVID-19. He’s going to self-quarantine, despite testing negative this past week. Assistant coach Angres Thorpe will coach the team while Whitesell is out. More HERE.
  • Jim Boeheim commented on his mask wearing techniques, “for anybody’s information, I do have trouble breathing with a mask. I have bad nasal passages,” he said. “So when I’m on the court, I pull it down to make myself heard and I’m 20 feet away from anybody. If I’m sitting in my chair, I’m 10 feet away from anybody.” The Syracuse head coach had been photographed and viewed on television with his mask down. More HERE.

  • Speaking of masks…Kentucky’s John Calipari and Notre Dame’s Mike Brey are both catching heat from the Lexington Herald Leader for the way they wore (or didn’t wear) their masks when the two teams met on Saturday. More HERE.
  • As was reported yesterday in the news & notes, with Will Wade out due to COVID issues, associate head coach Bill Armstrong will be coaching the team in his absence. In his first game, Armstrong led the Tigers to an 88-66 win over Sam Houston State yesterday. Wade is also expected to miss Wednesday’s gave vs New Orleans, so Armstrong will look to keep the Tigers 3-game win streak intact. More HERE.
  • Crazy COVID scheduling: NC State is looking for an opponent to play  on Wednesday or Thursday, head coach Kevin Keatts said yesterday on his radio show.  “We may find one,” Keatts said. “I’m still getting some guys back but we’re going to play if we can on Wednesday.” More HERE.
  • Two other interesting games just added yesterday…CSUN will host Stanford  today (more HERE), and Wichita State will host D2 Emporia State on Friday (more HERE).
  • ICYMI: Chicago State men’s basketball staff update HERE.
  • Week 3 HoopDirt.com / Just Play Solutions Coach of the Week winners were released yesterday. Complete list of winners is HERE.
