Daily News & Notes – 2/23/21

Today’s Daily News & Notes from around the college basketball coaching world…

Detroit Mercy head coach Mike Davis blasted the Horizon League’s tournament seeding formula. “I quit asking about the formula when they had us behind Green Bay and Youngstown State, and we swept both of them,” Davis said. “I quit asking about it. I don’t know where they got their formula from.” The Titans will be the 5-seed in the upcoming tournament – a 4-seed would have given them a bye. More HERE.

A great article from the Oklahoman on how Oklahoma State head coach Mike Boynton hopes to open doors for Black basketball coaches. “I’ve got a responsibility to help make sure that whatever I do while I’m here enhances someone else’s opportunity, not takes away from it.” More HERE. Side Note: Boynton’s squad had a huge 74-69 OT win over #18 Texas Tech last night to run their record to 15-6 (8-6 Big 12).

With Iowa State has struggling mightily this season, Cyclones head coach Steve Prohm addressed his relationship with AD Jamie Pollard in Monday’s weekly press conference. “I speak to Jamie all the time,” Prohm said. “Jamie is a good friend of mine. He’s been a great leader and mentor for me. Nothing different than in the past. We just talk. We meet all the time, talk all the time. Whether it’s text, phone. There’s nothing different. That’s the norm when you have communication.” Prohm, who has 4-yrs remaining on his contract, has been under fire lately, as ISU currently sits at 2-16 (0-13 Big 12) this season. The 0-13 start to conference play is the worst in school history, and the Cyclones are threatening to match or surpass the longest losing streak in school history (14) with its current skid measuring 12 games. Iona, who recently came off of a 51-day pause, has shut it down again. They will not complete their regular season schedule, and hope to return by March 8th for the MAAC tournament. Head Coach Rick Pitino had this to say about the situation; “This is extremely unfortunate news to learn at a time so late in the season. I feel awful for our student-athletes who worked so hard to get back following our pause that lasted nearly two months. The pandemic is still very real, and ultimately the health and safety of those around the program is most important. We look forward to returning and competing in the MAAC Championship in March.” More HERE.

Hoosiers Now’s Tom Brew went in on Indiana head coach Archie Miller in his recent article. “Archie Miller is Indiana’s beleaguered basketball coach right now, but for how much longer? He hasn’t had a shred of success in Bloomington, just a few moments here and there that get spun a certain way, but then disappear like a bubble floating in the soft wind.” More HERE.

Speaking of Indiana….Today marks the 36th anniversary of Bob Knights famous/infamous chair toss:

We had a bunch of recent milestones in yesterday’s Daily News (HERE), but missed this one:

Sean Miller collected win #300 at Arizona with the Wildcats  81-72 upset win over the 17th ranked USC. Only Lute Olson (Arizona) and Hec Edmundson (Washington) reached the milestone faster at a Pac-12 school. Miller’s career mark now stands at 420-155 (.730), with 120 of the wins coming in his five seasons at Xavier.
