West Texas A&M men’s basketball coach Tom Brown has announced the addition of Tez Dumars to his coaching staff. The former Buff returns to Canyon to join a coaching staff that led WT to a program record 32 wins and appearance in the Final Four last season.
“I was privileged enough to coach Tez for one season. I wish he would have been a freshman when we got him but he was a senior along with Antjuan Ball and Miles Gatewood. Those three seniors were retained from the previous staff,” Brown said. “He had a great senior year in 2014-15 and was instrumental in the turnaround of the program. He won seven more games his senior year than he did as a junior. He is someone that loves the game is always looking to learn.”
After finishing his collegiate career in 2015, Dumars played professionally overseas with Anagennises Germasogeia and ForexTime Apollon of the Cyrpus Division A League. He appeared in 11 games during his first year as a pro averaging 18.5 points per game and shooting 38.7% from the field and 32.8% from three-point range. He spent the 2016-17 season in Limassol, Cyprus with ForexTime Apollon.
“He will be great to have around the team as he just finished up playing professional ball,” Brown added. “He will have insights on the game from his experience playing professionally. This will only enhance the player experience on our team. We are very lucky to have Tez Dumars as an assistant coach.”
Dumars finished his impressive four-year career for the Buffs as the fourth-highest scorer in program history with 1,230 points. The Garland, Texas native also ranked third all-time in three-pointers made (183), second in threes attempted (529) and sixth in field goals attempted while ranking fourth in games played with 112.
During his senior season in 2014-15, Dumars went 135-of-329 (40.6%) from the floor including 39-of-126 (31%) from long range and 140-of-191 (73.3%) from the charity stripe as he averaged 15.5 points per game to go along with 59 assists and 28 steals. The 2012 Lone Star Conference Freshman of the Year scored 25 points in his final game in the LSC Quarterfinal’s against Texas A&M-Commerce.
