Texas A&M International Men’s Basketball Staff Update

The Texas A&M International University Athletic Department has announced the addition of Gabi Laurent & Sam Harrison to the coaching staff as the new Assistant Men’s Basketball Coaches. With impressive backgrounds in collegiate basketball, Gabi & Sam bring a wealth of experience to the team.

Gabi Laurent’s coaching journey has been marked by dedication and achievement, having previously served as an Assistant Men’s Basketball Coach at Southwestern Christian University in the 2016-2017 season under the mentorship of Dave Bliss. He further honed his coaching skills as an Assistant Men’s Basketball Coach at Ranger College under the guidance of coaching legends Billy Gillispie and Larry Brown.

In addition to his coaching roles, Gabi has an impressive history as a player. He played college basketball at both Ranger College and Southwestern Christian University, where he made a significant impact on the court. During his college basketball career, Gabi Laurent’s notable athletic accomplishments include being a two-time Conference Champion and earning All-Second Team Conference honors. His skills on the court have translated seamlessly into his coaching career.

Gabi Laurent’s passion for the game and commitment to player development are evident in his coaching style. He played a crucial role in the development of freshmen players during his tenure at Southwestern Christian University and has a keen understanding of the game’s intricacies.

Originally hailing from Nassau, Bahamas, Gabi Laurent’s one season as a player at Southwestern Christian University showcased his talent and versatility. He averaged 12.3 points per game and led the team in rebounds with an average of 6.1 boards per game during the 2015-16 season. His contributions were instrumental in SCU’s impressive season, culminating in a fourth-place finish in the Sooner Athletic Conference and a deep run in the NCCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament.

Sam Harrison has a strong history in coaching, having previously served as an Assistant Men’s Basketball Coach at Central Wyoming College, Kansas Wesleyan University, and Graceland University. His dedication and expertise in coaching have made him an invaluable asset to the teams he has been a part of.

In addition to his coaching career, Sam has a deep connection to the sport, having played Junior College basketball at Rock Valley College and later at Morningside College. His firsthand experience as a player has given him unique insights into the game, which he now shares with the next generation of athletes. 

Sam’s impressive athletic accomplishments include being a two-time NJCAA National Champion in 2014 and 2016, as well as achieving a D1 NAIA National Championship in 2018. These achievements demonstrate his commitment to excellence and his ability to thrive in high-pressure situations.

While Sam is joining our organization, he will not be accompanied by any family members, allowing him to fully dedicate his time and expertise to the development and success of our Men’s Basketball program.
