University of Denver men’s basketball head coach Jeff Wulbrun announced the first addition to his coaching staff on Monday, with Brandon Dunson coming on board as Associate Head Coach. Dunson will begin his role immediately for the Pioneers.
“Brandon is the only person I thought of when it came to hiring an associate head coach for my program at the University of Denver,” Wulbrun said. “He has established himself as one of the most well-rounded and respected assistant coaches in all of college basketball. He is an elite recruiter, talented coach on the court and an insightful tactician.
“My relationship with Brandon goes back 16 years and because of our history, I know the men in our program will have a high integrity mentor who prioritizes relationship building and leads by doing what’s right.”
Dunson joins the Pioneers after spending the last two seasons as a member of the Cal State Fullerton coaching staff.
“I am extremely excited to join Coach Wulbrun and the University of Denver family,” Dunson said. “Having played for him in high school and coached with him at Stanford, I know we have a great synergy and share many of the same values. He’s been a mentor for me on and off the court for my office my life and I’m elated to re-connect with him at such a prestigious university in one of the country’s most beautiful, fastest growing cities.”
In his first year with at Cal State Fullerton, Dunson and the 2019-20 Titans had their season cut short just prior to the start of the Big West Tournament due to COVID-19. Dunson helped Jackson Rowe and Brandon Kamga claim Second-Team All-Big West honors while Kamga was also named Big West Newcomer of the Year.
Dunson also brings some acclaim to the Crimson and Gold, being named to the 2019 NABC Under Armor 30 Under 30, in the fall of 2019, which recognizes the top 30 coaches in the country under the age of 30.
Dunson joined the Titans after spending the 2018-19 season in the same role at Nevada. The Wolf Pack were ranked as high as fifth nationally in the Associate Press polls, won the Mountain West Championship and tied a school record by winning 29 games.
During his time at Nevada, Dunson helped Caroline and Caleb Martin earn first-team all-conference honors while Cody Martin was named to the third team. Jazz Johnson was chosen as the the Sixth Man of the Year. Caroline and both Martins were selected to the defensive team. Prior to the season the Martin twins and Caroline were named to the 2018-19 MW media preseason team.
Dunson has a previous connection with Wulbrun, having served as the Director of Basketball Development at Stanford for two seasons from 2016-18, where Wulbrun was an assistant/associate head coach under Jerod Haase. Prior to that, he was coached by Wulbrun in during his school playing days.
Denver has started its offseason workouts in preparation for the upcoming 2021-22 season.
