Eastern Washington Basketball Staff Update

Eastern Washington men’s basketball head coach Dan Monson announced the hiring of two assistant coaches and new Director of Player Development to his 2024-25 staff. Will Turgeon and MicGuire Monson are added as assistant coaches and Alex Hobbs as Director of Player Development.

MicGuire Monson

MicGuire Monson has joined Eastern with an impressive track record in basketball operations. Most recently, he served as a graduate assistant at Long Beach State, where he was instrumental in player development, booster relations, and navigating Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) opportunities. During his time at Long Beach, Monson helped the team secure an NCAA tournament appearance and Big West tournament champions.

Before his time at Long Beach State, Monson was a student assistant at Boise State. There, he contributed to player development and player relations, gaining valuable experience that has shaped his approach to coaching and team management. His comprehensive background in both on-court and off-court aspects of basketball makes him a significant asset to Eastern. With his proven success and well-rounded skill set, Monson is well-positioned to make a positive impact on the Eagle basketball program and contribute to its future success.

Monson on Monson

“MicGuire was part of our staff at Long Beach State for the past two years and has been around college basketball his entire life. He will be able to bring continuity to our program with my philosophies and values. MicGuire possesses a great work ethic and feel for the game that will make a strong positive impact on our team.”

Alex Hobbs

Alex Hobbs joins Eastern after a notable stint as the assistant coach at Carroll College, where he served as head assistant coach for one season. During his time at Carroll, Hobbs played a key role in guiding the team to a national tournament appearance and a Frontier Conference championship game.

Before his coaching career, Hobbs was a standout guard at Boise State University, where he left a lasting legacy. He was a prolific scorer, finishing his career in the Broncos’ 1,000-point club. In 2018, he earned the Mountain West Conference’s Sixth Man of the Year award, and in 2019, he was recognized as an All-Conference performer. Over his college career, Hobbs played in 120 games, starting 42, and contributed to two NIT appearances.

Following college, Hobbs had a successful professional career, playing for the Kordall Steelers in Luxembourg, Germany. In his sole season with the team, he led the league in scoring and was named First Team All-Import.

Monson on Hobbs

“Alex comes to us from Carroll College, where he was Coach Lundgren’s lead assistant. Alex brings youth and enthusiasm to our team and will be able connect with players well. As an all-Mountain West level player at Boise State, he has been able to experience the game at the highest level, which will allow him to mentor our guys both on and off the court.”

Will Turgeon

Will Turgeon joins Eastern after serving as a Graduate Assistant at the University of Colorado for the past two seasons (2022-2024). At CU, Will was tasked with creating detailed scouting reports from film, managing road game operations, and contributing to the Buffaloes’ recruiting efforts by cutting and evaluating film for potential recruits. He also played a role in player development and outreach to alumni.

During his time on Head Coach Tad Boyle’s staff, Will contributed to Colorado’s historic 26-win season, the most in program history. The Buffaloes advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament, securing victories over Boise State in the First Four and Florida in the first round. Will was instrumental in player development for future NBA Draft picks Cody Williams, Tristan da Silva, and KJ Simpson.
Will completed his college career at The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., graduating in 2022. Originally from Kensington, Maryland, he played at Gonzaga High School in D.C.

Monson on Turgeon

“Will comes to us from a winning program in Colorado, where they advanced to the round of 32 in the 2024 NCAA tournament. His ability to connect and relate to people will be a great asset to our basketball program here at Eastern. As a head coach, it’s important to hire loyal assistants who are willing to go the extra mile for the team, and I feel we’ve gotten that in Coach Turgeon.”
