Fitzgerald resigns at Hinds CC, Nevol named new Head Basketball Coach

Yusef Fitzgerald has resigned as the head men’s basketball coach at Hinds CC (MS) and has become the Director of Athletics at The Piney Wood School (MS). Fitzgerald had been the head coach at HCC since 2017, and served as an assistant at Iona before that. He will be replaced by assistant coach Jonathan Nevol, who had been on staff since 2018. Here is the official release by Hinds announcing Nevol’s promotion:

Jonathan Nevol is the new Hinds Community College men’s basketball head coach for the 2021-2022 season.

“Being named the head coach at Hinds is more than a blessing, I’m astonished, and I have to give credit to God,” Nevol said. “I prayed and kept faith that I would receive a blessing such as this. Hinds is a very special place to me, and I am excited to elevate this program to even a higher level.”

Nevol started working at Hinds as assistant coach in August 2018. Prior to arriving at Hinds, Nevol was the head coach at Blue Mountain College.

“Coach Nevol has become very involved with various activities at the Utica Campus and was a vital part of the success the team has most recently experienced,” said Randall Harris, vice president of Operations and Student Services.

In 2016, Nevol became an assistant coach at Jones College for one season. During that one season, Jones College finished 29-2 (school record), won the MACJC State Championship, Region 23 Championship, earned a Sweet 16 appearance in the NJCAA Tournament and finished ranked eighth in the NJCAA.

Nevol started out as a student manager at Ole Miss in 2008. After graduating, Nevol began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Ole Miss in 2012. In 2014, he was promoted to video coordinator and served in that capacity for two more seasons.

In total, Nevol spent eight years with Andy Kennedy at Ole Miss. In that span, Kennedy won 167 games while becoming the all-time winningest head coach in school history (245). Also, during his time at Ole Miss, Nevol was a part of numerous successes including: 2010 SEC West Champions, 2013 SEC Champions, along with six postseason appearances, one National Invitation Tournament (NIT) Final Four appearance and two NCAA Tournament appearances, advancing both times.

While at Ole Miss, Nevol earned his bachelor’s of science in criminal justice in 2012 and finished his masters in criminal justice in May 2014.

Nevol is a 2008 graduate of Water Valley High School, where he was a four-year letterman and was named All-District in his senior year in which he led his team to the state quarterfinals.
