Jacksonville University men’s basketball announced the addition of Michael Fly to the staff on Tuesday.
He assumes the role of Associate Head Coach under Head Coach Jordan Mincy, who is entering his third year at the helm of the program.
“Coach Fly is an unbelievable addition to Jacksonville basketball. He is a proven winner and relentless recruiter who knows the ASUN Conference inside and out and his experience will be invaluable to our players and staff,” Mincy remarked. “We are excited to welcome he and his family as part of our Dolphin family.”
Fly comes to JU with 17 years of experience in college and pro basketball.
“I am thrilled and honored to join Coach Jordan Mincy and his staff at Jacksonville University,” said Fly. “Throughout my career I have had the good fortune of working for outstanding organizations with incredible coaches. After speaking with Coach Mincy about his vision for the men’s basketball program at Jacksonville, it became immediately clear to me that I wanted to be part of his journey.
“I look forward to getting on campus and connecting with his staff and players.”
Most recently, he served as the Director of Scouting and Analytics last season at Missouri under first-year head coach Dennis Gates.
“Michael Fly will be an incredible asset to Coach Jordan Mincy and the Jacksonville University program. In just one year, he played an instrumental role in helping build the University of Missouri into a top-25 program nationally,” said Gates. “Coach Fly brought tremendous value as a former head coach, not only to me, but to our entire staff and student-athletes as a mentor and advisor.
“I am excited for him to return to Florida, where he spent over a decade building a winning reputation on the court and on the recruiting trail.”
Prior to his stint in Columbia, he was the head coach at FGCU from 2018-22. While in that role, he led the Eagles to the third-most wins in a single season in program history with 22 victories during the 2021-22 campaign. Two players received ASUN Newcomer of the Year honors and one was named Defensive Player of the Year in the league under Fly’s leadership.
He ascended to the head coaching role after working alongside Joe Dooley, and prior to that, Andy Enfield, as an assistant coach during the most successful stretch in the history of the FGCU program. The Eagles won six ASUN Championships and made three NCAA Tournaments during that time, including the historic Sweet 16 run in 2013, in which they became the first 15 seed to ever advance that far in the tournament.
Before heading to Fort Myers in 2011, he was the video coordinator at Florida State for three seasons, helping the Seminoles make the NCAA Tournament all three years, including a Sweet 16 in his final season. He also spent a year as a video coordinator for the Charlotte Bobcats, working alongside current Cleveland Cavaliers head coach J.B. Bickerstaff. Fly graduated from Kentucky in 2004 and got his start in coaching as a Volunteer Assistant the following year at Georgetown College (D-II).
“I want to thank Coach Dennis Gates and his staff for the unforgettable season at Missouri and the kindness they showed my family and I in Columbia. I also want to thank Alex Ricker-Gilbert, Coach Mincy and his staff for the warm welcome to Jacksonville and this tremendous opportunity. Phins Up!”
