It was announced today (July 8) by Providence College Head Coach Ed Cooley that LaDontae Henton has been hired as the Special Assistant to the Head Coach for the men’s basketball program. Henton replaces Matthew Garvey who resigned last month to continue his coaching career at the prep school level. This season will be Henton’s second stint at Providence, but first on staff as he played for the Friars from 2011-2015 while getting his degree in Social Science.
 
“I am very excited to have LaDontae on our staff,” Providence College Head Coach Ed Cooley said. “LaDontae was my first recruit at Providence. I have seen him grow as a player and a person and as a mentor as well. He has a lot of experience playing the game and I believe our players will benefit from having him around and learning from what it takes to win at this level.”
 
Henton led the Friars to three post-season berths (one NIT, two NCAAs) and one Big East title (2014) in his four seasons at Providence. Henton became the second Friar ever to score more than 2,000 points and grab 1,000 rebounds in his career. He ranks second all-time in scoring (2,059 points) and fifth all time in rebounding (1,054 rebounds). As a senior, he was named Associated Press Honorable Mention All-America, First Team ALL-BIG EAST, United States Basketball Writers Association District 1 Player of the Year and USBW All-District 1 Team.
 
As the Special Assistant to the Head Coach, Henton will assist the Head Coach in a number of different areas. Henton will mentor current student athletes off the court in areas such as academic, social media, and community engagement. He also will act as a resource for the student athletes and the Athletic department in the areas of student athlete development and DEI.
 
Henton lives in Providence, R.I. with his daughter, Aleena, and her mother, Karina Garcia.
