Garrett Jones Named Head Coach at Montreat College

Montreat College has announced the hiring of Garrett Jones as the head coach for the men’s basketball program. Jones comes to Montreat after serving the past four years as the assistant coach at Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) in Waxahachie, Texas.
During his time at SAGU, Jones was part of a coaching staff that took a program that had gone fourteen years without a winning season and turned them into a national power, going 108-32 since 2011. This incredible run was highlighted by three straight appearances at the NAIA Division I National Tournament (2013-2015). Jones’ 2013 squad had an incredible season, going 33-5 and advancing to the NAIA Division I National Championship Game. The following season, Jones helped lead the team to a 26-6 record and a season that culminated with another top-10 national ranking.
“Coach Jones has served faithfully under the leadership and mentorship of arguably one of the most successful, godly leaders in college basketball in the last 10 years, Coach Donnie Bostwick,” shared Athletic Director Jose Larios. “Garrett demonstrated a great passion and vision for our men’s program. I’m thrilled to have him bring the winning work ethic to our team while remaining Christ-centered in all we do on and off the court.”
Prior to his arrival at SAGU, Jones served as a graduate assistant at his alma mater, Oklahoma Wesleyan University from 2009-2011. During his time at OWU, Jones helped guide the team to back-to-back NAIA Division II National Championship appearances, winning the title in 2009.
During his undergraduate career at OWU, Jones, was a four-year member of the men’s basketball team. Under the guidance of current Southwestern Assemblies of God Head Coach Donnie Bostwick, Jones and his teammates helped turn around the program at OWU, and their three year run of NAIA tournament appearances culminated in a NAIA Division II National Championship and 35-2 record in 2009.
Coach Jones had this to say about his opportunity to come to Montreat College, “It’s a great honor and privilege to lead Montreat Basketball moving forward. I’m excited get to work! I want to first thank God for giving my wife and me this opportunity to join the Montreat family. I also want to send my sincere thanks to President Maurer and the search committee for their leadership during this process and giving me the opportunity to lead Montreat men’s basketball.”
“I look forward to reaching out to all our players and start building a relationship with each one and learning how I can help them accomplish their dreams and goals on and off the court. I understand we have a lot of work to do in growing this program and moving it forward but I appreciate all the former players and alumni that have given their time and effort to make Montreat Basketball what it is today”
Coach Jones and his wife Whitney will be moving to Montreat in early August.
