George Washington University men’s basketball head coach Chris Caputo has officially announced the promotions of Matt Colpoys and Cooper Handelsman to assistant coaches, elevating each of their roles in the program.
Per new NCAA rules in effect this season, men’s basketball saw an increase in two coaches allowed to perform on-court duties.
“Both Matt and Cooper have executed their roles with tremendous energy and precision,” Caputo said. “We are rewarding them for their job well done and expanding their roles. There’s nothing better than to elevate within, as both have served in assistant coaching roles at Johns Hopkins and Brown.”
Colpoys, who was brought in from Johns Hopkins as the Director of Recruiting in September 2022, has served as GW’s co-offensive coordinator this season. The Buff & Blue are averaging 81.8 points per game this season, currently the fourth-best mark in program history and best since the 1969-70 campaign. GW is also on pace to break the school record for 3-pointers in a season and currently ranks in the top-40 nationally in 3s per game and 3-point percentage.
Handelsman, who was recently named to the Silver Waves Media 2024 50 Nxt Up list, adds an Assistant Coach title to his Director of Operations responsibilities. A former assistant at Brown prior to his time in Foggy Bottom, Handelsman has helped in preparation for late game situations and special situations. He has been instrumental for a GW program that is 5-0 in games decided by five points or less this season and 3-1 in overtime.
