Georgia State Basketball Staff Update

Georgia State head men’s basketball welcomes Jeff Dunlap and Stevie Taylor to the program’s coaching staff, head coach Jonas Hayes announced on Tuesday afternoon.

“I am so excited to add Jeff Dunlap and Stevie Taylor to our program,” Men’s Basketball Head Coach Jonas Hayes said. “I believe they are the perfect fits for our program and are exactly what we need moving forward.”

A seasoned collegiate coaching veteran, Jeff Dunlap joins the Panthers as an assistant coach following an extensive and accomplished career spanning multiple levels of basketball. Most recently, Dunlap served as an assistant coach at California State University, Northridge from 2020 to 2025. During his tenure, he helped guide the Matadors to 37 wins, including 22 in Big West Conference play. CSUN posted its best conference finish in 11 seasons in 2019-20, claiming second place and the No. 2 seed in the league tournament. Under his leadership, the team also led the Big West in scoring in his first two seasons.

“Coach Dunlap brings a wealth of experience, knowledge and trustworthiness to our program as we move forward, and I believe he will help move this program to the next level. I also couldn’t be more excited about what he brings from a recruiting standpoint, from basketball standpoint and from a player development standpoint.”

Dunlap reunited with Mark Gottfried at CSUN in 2018-19 after previously serving alongside him at NC State (2011-17) and Alabama (2007-09). At NC State, Dunlap played a key role in the Wolfpack’s four NCAA Tournament appearances, including two Sweet Sixteen runs. He also worked under Jim Harrick at Georgia from 1999-2003, helping the Bulldogs reach the NCAA Tournament twice.

His coaching career also includes stops at Western Michigan, Loyola-Chicago, Fullerton College, Cal State Fullerton, Quincy University, and the College of the Canyons. Beyond collegiate basketball, Dunlap was the head coach and general manager of the St. John’s Edge in the National Basketball League of Canada during the 2017-18 season, leading the team to a 30-19 record and a playoff run to the divisional finals. He was named the league’s Executive of the Year and earned two Coach of the Month honors.

A three-year letterwinner at UCLA from 1983-86, Dunlap helped the Bruins to the 1985 NIT Championship. He graduated with a degree in political science in 1986 and earned a master’s in physical education from Azusa Pacific in 1998. Originally from North Hollywood, Calif., Dunlap brings over three decades of coaching experience across Division I, Division II, and junior college levels.

Joining Dunlap on the Georgia State bench is Stevie Taylor, who comes to Atlanta following a successful stint at Iowa State. Taylor was elevated to assistant coach after serving as the assistant director of player development. In 2023-24, he helped lead the Cyclones to a Big 12 Championship and a trip to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament.

“I’m excited to welcome Stevie Taylor to our program,” Hayes said. “He has a magnetic personality, an unbelievable amount of positive energy, that our guys are going to be drawn to. To be so young, but also someone that is so experienced- Our guys are going to love him. He is the perfect fit for our program.”

Before Iowa State, Taylor was the director of operations at Toledo for the 2022-23 season. The Rockets posted a 27-win campaign and captured their third straight outright Mid-American Conference title. He also served as an assistant coach at Nicholls in 2021-22, where the Colonels won the Southland Conference championship with a 21-9 record.

Taylor began his collegiate coaching journey as a graduate assistant at Boston College from 2017 to 2019, followed by two seasons as an assistant at Langston University in Oklahoma from 2019 to 2021.

As a player, Taylor was a standout at Ohio University, appearing in 137 games with 34 starts. He helped guide the Bobcats to three postseason appearances, including a Sweet 16 run during his freshman season. He earned his bachelor’s degree in University Studies from Ohio in 2015 and a master’s in Sports Administration from Boston College in 2019.

With the additions of Jeff Dunlap and Stevie Taylor, the Georgia State men’s basketball program continues to build a dynamic and experienced coaching staff as it prepares for the upcoming season under Coach Hayes’ leadership.
