Grand Valley State adds Sterling Johnson to Men’s Basketball Staff

Grand Valley State men’s basketball head coach Cornell Mann has announced the addition of Sterling Johnson to the Lakers’ coaching staff as an assistant coach for the 2024-25 season.

Johnson comes to GVSU after spending one season as a graduate assistant at Virginia Tech where was responsible for assisting with player development, film breakdown and scouting reports. He earned his degree this summer in Agricultural and Life Sciences focus in Education.

Before spending one season at Virginia Tech, Johnson spent one year as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Northwood. He also made previous stops at Schoolcraft College, University of Northwestern Ohio, and Defiance College. Johnson also is the founder of his own basketball camp, named the Sterling Johnson Fundamental Basketball Camp. It is an annual camp targeted for athletes in the Clinton Township and Mount Clemens area. 

Johnson was a four-year letterwinner at Saginaw Valley State from 2012-16. During his tenure for the Cardinals, Johnson appeared in 108 games. During his senior campaign in 2015-16, Johnson was a member of the winningest team in program history, reaching the Elite Eight where he shot 46% from the field and 43% from three on the season.
