Truman State University men’s basketball head coach, Jeff Horner, has completed his staff with the hiring of a second assistant in Pat Sodemann. Sodemann, a 2015 graduate of Illinois Wesleyan University comes to Kirksville after a 2017-18 NCAA Tournament run at Ohio Dominican University.
“We are excited to have Pat be a part of Truman State men’s basketball again,” said Horner. “His roots in the St. Louis area will definitely give us an advantage in recruiting the state of Missouri. Pat played an integral part in Ohio Dominican’s NCAA Tournament this past season and we look forward to that experience on our bench for the Bulldogs.”
Sodemann helped lead the Panthers (20-11, 12-8 G-MAC) to their fourth-ever 20-win campaign, a conference tournament title and an NCAA Tournament appearance, the last two of which hadn’t been done since they joined the Division II ranks prior to the 2011-12 season. ODU entered the Big Dance having won eight games in a row and 12 of its last 13, which included a 68-66 buzzer-beating victory at No. 11 Findlay in the G-MAC Tournament semifinals.
“I’m excited to be back in the city of Kirksville at such a great University,” said Sodemann. “I appreciate Jerry Wollmering and Jeff Horner giving me the opportunity to be a part of this program again. I can’t wait to get to work with our guys and continue the success of recent years.”
Prior to his time in Columbus, Ohio, Sodemann began his coaching career with a two-year stint as a graduate assistant at Missouri Baptist University in St. Louis of the NAIA. Under head coach, Matt Brock, the Spartans went a combined 36-27 including 19-12 in 2015-16, their first season with that many wins in 10 years.
As a player, the St. Louis native spent two seasons at Truman (2010-12), the second of which was a redshirt year, before transferring to Division III Illinois Wesleyan (2012-15) in Bloomington, Ill. As a member of the Titans, Sodemann scored 792 points (9.5 per game) and in the program’s career record book, he ranks fourth in three-point field goal percentage (.440) and 10th in triples made (140).
