UCLA has signed head men’s basketball coach Steve Alford to a one-year contract extension through the 2020-21 season, it was announced today by Director of Athletics Dan Guerrero.
In 2013-14, his first season as UCLA’s head coach, Alford led the Bruins to a 28-9 record while guiding UCLA to its first NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 appearance and first Pac-12 Tournament title since 2008. The Bruins, who also registered their highest single-season win total since 2007-08, won their first two Pac-12 Tournament games by an average of 22 points before knocking off top-seeded Arizona to secure their fourth conference tournament championship in program history.
As the No. 4 seed in the South Region of the NCAA Tournament, UCLA defeated Tulsa and Stephen F. Austin in San Diego, advancing to the Sweet 16. The Bruins’ 28 victories with Alford as head coach equaled the UCLA record for most victories by any head coach in his first season in Westwood (Gene Bartow, 28 wins in 1975-76).
Following the season in June, UCLA produced three first-round NBA Draft picks for the second time in school history and was the only program in the nation to have three first-round selections in the 2014 NBA Draft (Zach LaVine, Jordan Adams and Kyle Anderson).
For the 2014-15 season, Alford and his coaching staff secured an incoming freshman class ranked among the top 10 nationally by multiple recruiting services and will open the season with three high school McDonald’s All-Americans – sophomore Isaac Hamilton and freshmen Kevon Looney and Thomas Welsh – set to take the court for the first time as Bruins.
In addition to the Bruins’ accomplishments on the court, UCLA recently announced a campaign to raise private funds for a comprehensive basketball practice facility to be located near Pauley Pavilion at the south end of the Los Angeles Tennis Center. The planned facility will support the UCLA men’s and women’s basketball programs, containing practice gyms, locker rooms and a training area, among other ancillary spaces and amenities.
