Stanford’s Anne and Tony Joseph Director of Men’s Basketball Johnny Dawkins has had his contract extended by the school, Jaquish and Kenninger Director of Athletics Bernard Muir announced today. Terms of the contract were not disclosed per University policy.
Leading one of college basketball’s most accomplished programs, Dawkins led the Cardinal to the 2014 NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 and the 2012 Postseason NIT championship.
“Johnny Dawkins is a phenomenal educator and tireless worker,” said Muir. “Our on-court success last year combined with ongoing academic accomplishments and the overall development of our student-athletes illustrates Johnny’s ability to lead this program into the future.”
The 2013-14 campaign was especially memorable, as Stanford (23-13, 10-8 Pac-12) advanced to the Sweet 16 for only the fifth time in school history victories over No. 7 seed New Mexico and No. 2 seed Kansas. Despite losing two starters and two key reserves to season-ending injuries, Stanford tied for third in the highly-competitive Pac-12 and finished 5-2 against top-25 foes. Of Stanford’s 36 games, 19 came against NCAA Tournament competition, including a 53-51 road victory at No. 10/10 Connecticut on Dec. 18 that represented the only non-conference loss for the NCAA champion Huskies.
“I want to thank athletic director Bernard Muir and the Stanford community for outstanding support and allowing our staff to do what we love,” said Dawkins. “Being part of the Stanford family is special and there is no place I’d rather be. We are committed to enhancing Stanford’s reputation of excellence in the classroom and on the court.”
Dawkins has overseen the development of Landry Fields, Josh Huestis and Dwight Powell, all of whom parlayed outstanding senior seasons into NBA Draft selections. Huestis (first round) and Powell (second round) were taken in the first round of the 2014 NBA Draft while Fields (second round) was chosen in 2010.
Dawkins has ably maintained Stanford’s high academic standards with his teams producing the most All-Pac-12 All-Academic selections in each of the past five years. Last year saw six honorees while NBA draftee Dwight Powell also earned Pac-12 Scholar-Athlete of the Year honors.
Dawkins’ 2014 recruiting class represents the latest top-20 crop of freshmen to arrive on The Farm. Even more impressively, that same young talent is being developed quickly. Chasson Randle, a 2014-15 All-American candidate, became the fourth player to earn All-Freshman Team status among conference players during Dawkins’ tenure when he was named in 2012.
Dawkins, who currently serves on the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Ethics Coalition and NABC Board of Directors, owns a 117-87 career record with four postseason appearances.
