Hurley inks new 6-yr deal at UConn

The University of Connecticut and men’s basketball head coach Dan Hurley have agreed upon terms for a new six-year contract as announced by director of athletics David Benedict.

The contract, which runs through 2029, is valued at $32.1 million over the six-year term and includes the opportunity to earn additional compensation in the form of performance-based incentives.

“I am thrilled to have Dan Hurley leading our men’s basketball program,” commented Benedict.  “The work he and his staff have done over the past five years in rebuilding our program, which culminated in the Huskies once again reaching the pinnacle of college basketball, has been nothing short of remarkable. I know all of UConn Nation is ecstatic that Dan will continue to lead this program for the foreseeable future.”

Hurley took over the UConn program in March of 2018 and in five years has brought the Huskies from three consecutive losing seasons to the NCAA National Championship, the fifth in the history of the program.

“My family and I sincerely appreciate Dr. Maric, David Benedict and the entire administration team for the faith and trust they have bestowed upon us,” Coach Hurley said. “I want to thank the players and staff who helped make this climb possible. Coaching at the University of Connecticut is an honor and we intend to build on our success as one of the premier programs in college basketball.”

After a 31-8 record in 2022-23 – Hurley’s first 30-win season – the coach’s 13-year career record stands at 255-160 (.614).  His five-year record at UConn is 104-55 (.654) – the fourth highest winning percentage among UConn coaches who coached more than 20 games in 100-plus years of basketball history.  UConn’s winning percentage has improved in each season under Hurley.

Hurley is one of only four active Division I coaches who have guided three different programs (Wagner, Rhode Island, UConn) to a 25-win season and won a national championship.  His .726 overall winning percentage after three years in the BIG EAST is the third-highest in conference history.

“The UConn community has welcomed me, my wife Andrea and our boys, Danny and Andrew, from Day One,” Hurley said. “Their support has meant the world to us.”

Salary increases in Coach Hurley’s new contract as well as other program investments will be covered through the generosity of donors to the Husky Athletic Fund and increased ticket sales revenue.
